Apple TV+ has officially confirmed that its hit crime series Down Cemetery Road will return for a second season. The announcement comes just days after the airing of the first season’s finale, signaling strong confidence in the show. Critics and audiences alike have praised the series, with some outlets calling it the crime thriller of the year.

Based on the novels by Mick Herron, who also wrote the source material for Slow Horses, the show features a unique detective duo. Oscar winner Emma Thompson stars as the struggling Oxford private investigator Zoë Boehm. She is joined by Ruth Wilson, who plays Sarah Trafford, a neighbor turned amateur sleuth.

The upcoming season promises to plunge the pair into another dark and twisted mystery. According to the official synopsis, the story begins when a woman falls in front of a train, prompting Zoë to investigate what appears to be a straightforward tragedy. However, the case quickly spirals into a complex web involving the ruthless world of black market antiquities.

Matters are expected to take a deadly turn as the investigation puts them in the path of a brutal serial killer. The new season will once again be written by Morwenna Banks, ensuring the sharp wit and tension of the first season remain intact.

Emma Thompson expressed her excitement about the renewal in a statement released by the streaming service. She noted that she is thrilled the show has been enjoyed enough to warrant a continuation. Thompson added that she cannot wait to “pull on her knock-off Doc Martens again” and reunite with Wilson.

The rapid renewal highlights Apple’s strategy of investing in high-quality British dramas with strong literary foundations. With the critical success of both Down Cemetery Road and Slow Horses, the platform is cementing its reputation as a home for top-tier crime fiction.

Let us know your theories for the next chapter and what you hope to see from Zoë and Sarah in the comments.
