Apple TV’s ‘Last Seen’ Emerges as the Streamer’s Unexpected Hit of the Season
Apple TV has been steadily establishing itself as a go-to platform for crime dramas that reward viewers’ patience, and its latest offering, ‘Last Seen,’ is no exception. Released with minimal promotion alongside larger returning titles, the show has quickly garnered a dedicated audience captivated by its slow-burn mystery. The narrative revolves around a father who is unwilling to let go of a decade-old disappearance, a premise that has effectively drawn viewers in.
Produced by 60Forty Films, ‘Last Seen’ is adapted by writer and executive producer Kris Mrksa from Ryan David Jahn’s Dagger Award-winning novel ‘The Dispatcher.’ Directed and executive produced by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Christian Schwochow, the series is set and filmed entirely in Victoria, Australia. While the original book was based in Texas, the adaptation successfully relocates the story while maintaining its core mystery.
This strategic move seems to be paying off significantly. Since its debut, the Australian thriller has rapidly ascended Apple TV’s global charts, currently ranking fourth on the platform’s worldwide series chart according to FlixPatrol, ahead of ‘Slow Horses’ and trailing only ‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘Silo,’ and ‘Dark Matter.’ The swift rise of this six-part limited series speaks volumes about audience engagement.
Critics have also responded positively. ‘Last Seen’ boasts an impressive 82 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes from its initial reviews, marking a strong start for a newly launched series. The Guardian’s Luke Buckmaster expressed that he felt deeply invested from the outset and was completely hooked by the third episode.
The plot centers on police detective Ian Ridley, portrayed by Patrick Brammall, whose life unraveled eleven years ago when his young daughter Maggie vanished without a trace. Now serving as a dispatcher, he has never accepted the possibility that she might be gone for good. The supporting cast includes Brendan Cowell, Maxine Peake, and Daniel Henshall. The first two episodes are currently available for streaming, with a new episode released every Wednesday leading up to the finale.
Brammall has hinted that the latter half of the season will take unexpected turns. He shared with TechRadar that his character Ian is not a traditional hero, noting that his motivations are altruistic yet intertwined with hope and guilt over his past failures. He added that by the end, the agency shifts away from both Ian and Henry, placing it in Sarah’s hands instead, a twist that is completely unexpected for a crime drama.
With four episodes remaining and its chart position continuing to rise, ‘Last Seen’ appears to be the kind of slow-burn thriller that will keep audiences talking long after the finale airs. Will Ian ever find closure regarding Maggie’s fate, or is the conclusion headed toward a more chaotic resolution than anyone anticipates?
