Ashley Eckstein Calls This ‘Star Wars’ Show the One That Revived the Franchise
Ashley Eckstein, the voice behind Ahsoka Tano, shared her thoughts on how the landscape of ‘Star Wars’ felt before it evolved into the expansive universe we know today. She recalled that when ‘The Clone Wars’ first premiered, the future of ‘Star Wars’ was quite uncertain.
During that period, there were no new films or significant ‘Star Wars’ projects on television. Eckstein mentioned that the team behind the animated series felt as though they were the sole guardians of the franchise, believing that ‘Star Wars’ might be nearing its end.
She stated, “For us, it’s easy to forget, but when ‘Clone Wars’ was on the air, there was no other ‘Star Wars.’ We thought ‘Star Wars’ was done. This was before Disney bought it and we were the only thing on the air… Without the success of ‘Clone Wars,’ we might not be seeing ‘Mandalorian,’ ‘Boba Fett,’ etcetera.”
Her remarks underscore the significant role ‘The Clone Wars’ played over time. What began as an animated side project gradually transformed into a cornerstone of the entire franchise. Characters and narratives from the series have influenced nearly everything that followed.
The show offered deeper explorations of characters like Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi while also introducing new fan-favorite characters. Ahsoka Tano, portrayed by Eckstein, emerged as a pivotal figure in live-action ‘Star Wars’ projects, showcasing the far-reaching impact of the series.
Today, numerous ‘Star Wars’ shows on Disney+ are directly linked to concepts first introduced in the animated series. Programs like ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘Ahsoka,’ ‘The Bad Batch,’ and ‘Star Wars Rebels’ all build upon storylines and characters that trace back to ‘The Clone Wars.’
Recent projects continue to reflect this connection. ‘The Mandalorian’ has featured characters and references from the animated series, including beloved appearances that reward viewers familiar with the earlier shows. This interconnected universe now ties together almost every new ‘Star Wars’ project.
However, not all fans are on board with this direction. Some viewers feel that modern ‘Star Wars’ has become overly reliant on interconnected storytelling. In particular, later seasons of ‘The Mandalorian’ received mixed reactions from audiences who preferred the simpler narrative style of its early episodes. Others appreciate the deeper continuity and long-running story arcs.
The influence of Dave Filoni, a key creative force behind ‘The Clone Wars,’ is now evident throughout the franchise. Many current ‘Star Wars’ projects are either directly developed by him or shaped by ideas he introduced years ago.

There have also been behind-the-scenes adjustments in how these stories are crafted. At one point, ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 4 was anticipated to set up future events in ‘Ahsoka.’ However, those plans shifted as focus transitioned to a film project, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu.’ Nevertheless, reports indicate that the movie still contains small ties to upcoming narratives.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this timeline. ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 is currently expected to arrive in 2027 on Disney+.
Reflecting on the past, Eckstein’s comments emphasize how unexpected the franchise’s evolution has been. A show that once seemed like the end of ‘Star Wars’ ultimately became the foundation for its modern era.
