Robert Downey Jr. has always gone above and beyond when it comes to promoting his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his portrayal of Doctor Doom is no exception. Since his unexpected reveal as the iconic villain in 2024, Downey has fully embraced the character’s enigmatic nature, appearing at press events adorned in green and building genuine excitement around a role that dramatically alters his Marvel legacy.

This dedication reached new heights at Comic-Con this past July, where Downey showcased a custom black suit embellished with green inscriptions across the pockets, chest, and cuffs. Unlike his previous appearances, this outfit was not merely stylish; it was entirely inscribed in Latverian runes, the fictional language associated with Doctor Doom’s homeland in the comics.

The intricate design immediately sparked fans’ curiosity, prompting them to take on the challenge of deciphering the hidden messages. Thanks to a cipher derived from both Downey’s suit and text found at an official “Dom Latveria” coffee pop-up during SXSW, Instagram user @editwithego successfully decoded most of the suit’s concealed text.

The translation reveals a suit rich with thematic significance. The text on Downey’s right pocket translates to “Revenge,” while the left pocket reads “Justice,” words that resonate with Doom’s motivations as the film unfolds. The lapel inscription states, “There is no promise of tomorrow,” while the text along his cuffs reads, “To the victor go the spoils.”

The cuffs line cleverly plays on Victor von Doom’s name, hinting that he may emerge victorious by the film’s conclusion. The lapel phrase serves as a nod to the character’s tragic past, reflecting on life’s fragility and the losses that have shaped his worldview. It could also ominously suggest that no timeline is secure once Doom takes charge.

However, not every part of the suit has been deciphered. @editwithego noted that one specific passage over Downey’s heart remains a mystery, as two of the runes used are not found in the reconstructed alphabet, leaving that message unsolved for now.

Marvel has been incorporating this runic theme into its broader marketing for “Avengers: Doomsday,” featuring stained glass designs and Latverian script in official posters and promotional materials beyond just Downey’s Comic-Con appearance. This consistency hints that the studio is intentionally setting the stage for future puzzles and Easter eggs related to Doom’s mythology as the film’s release approaches.

Downey has openly discussed his perspective on the character, emphasizing that despite Doom’s villainous reputation, his actions in the film are intended to be seen as heroic rather than purely destructive. This framing adds depth to the phrases “justice” and “revenge” prominently displayed on the suit, suggesting that Doom views himself as settling a score rather than simply causing chaos.

“Avengers: Doomsday” is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, reuniting Downey with Chris Hemsworth, Hayley Atwell, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, and a large ensemble cast. The film will lead directly into “Avengers: Secret Wars,” concluding the Multiverse Saga.

With one final passage over Downey’s heart still unsolved, fans have ample reason to continue searching for any remaining clues Marvel has hidden throughout the character’s promotional campaign.
