Marvel enthusiasts have had much to celebrate recently, with record-breaking trailer views and a flurry of casting announcements leading up to December. However, the latest excitement surrounding ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is not about the footage or sneak peeks.

The focus has shifted to box office figures, and the numbers being discussed are turning heads throughout the industry. Ticket sales for a film that is still five months away from its release are already being compared to one of the summer’s top blockbusters.

According to industry trackers, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is matching, and in some areas even exceeding, the first-day sales of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ despite having access to only about one-tenth of the theater allocation. This comparison is significant given the impressive numbers that ‘Brand New Day’ has already achieved.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has achieved the best first-day presales for any film in the last five years, a record last held by ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ in 2021. The Tom Holland sequel reportedly garnered over $120 million in global presales prior to its release, placing it alongside ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which still holds the all-time advance sales record.

The striking aspect of the ‘Doomsday’ comparison is the timing and access involved. Advance tickets for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ only became available on July 20, and only for screenings at Infinity Vision theaters, which is a limited premium format rather than a full nationwide rollout.

Despite this limited availability, the response was swift. Reports indicate that all Infinity Vision presale showings sold out rapidly, with ‘Doomsday’ pre-sales reportedly exceeding the entire opening day total of ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ within just two hours of tickets going live.

This level of demand is particularly impressive considering that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ won’t hit theaters until December 18, a full five months after its presale window opened. Most major films do not begin serious ticket sales until just weeks before their release, making this early surge an unusually strong indicator of anticipation.

Fans and box office analysts have noted how rare this kind of comparison is. There are few instances of a film generating this level of presale interest so far ahead of its theatrical debut, especially when compared to a movie as eagerly awaited as the next mainline Spider-Man installment.

Much of the excitement can likely be attributed to the trailer drop that occurred just before tickets became available. Robert Downey Jr.’s first extended look as Doctor Doom, along with the returns of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and a wave of X-Men and Fantastic Four crossovers, provided fans with ample reasons to secure their seats early.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is set to premiere on July 31, giving it a significant lead before ‘Doomsday’ arrives later in the year. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film follows Peter Parker after the memory-altering events of ‘No Way Home,’ and industry projections suggest it is on track for one of the biggest domestic openings of the year.

Even with the gap in release dates, the fact that ‘Doomsday’ is maintaining this pace early on, and doing so with a fraction of the screens available, highlights the significant momentum Marvel has built as it heads into its next major crossover event. Whether this early enthusiasm translates into an actual opening weekend record will be determined once the film receives a full nationwide release closer to December.

For now, the presale numbers alone are enough to fuel the ongoing debate about which film will ultimately come out on top. What are your thoughts on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ already competing with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in ticket sales? Share your opinions in the comments.
