‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Breaks Records with Historic Theatrical Re-Release
Marvel Studios is known for its grand gestures, and the decision to bring ‘Avengers: Endgame’ back to theaters seven years after its initial release is no exception. The re-release, titled ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ debuted this weekend featuring new footage aimed at connecting the 2019 blockbuster with its highly anticipated sequel, ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
This new content has clearly struck a chord with fans even before the film’s opening day. Presale tracking indicated that the film achieved the largest first-day presales of the century for any theatrical re-release, outpacing the previous record held by the 2012 return of ‘Titanic 3D,’ and the excitement only continued to grow.
Early Thursday preview numbers have confirmed the strong demand, with estimates suggesting around $4 million in domestic previews and positive word-of-mouth. This preview success has led trackers to predict an opening weekend haul of $25 million or more, setting the stage for a competitive box office showdown.
‘Endgame Encore’ is projected to earn between $25 million and $28 million domestically during its opening weekend, as reported by Variety, placing it in direct competition with Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ reboot for the top spot. That horror film opened to a franchise-record $61 million last weekend and is expected to earn an additional $24 million to $26 million in its second weekend, making this weekend’s box office race a close one between a beloved re-release and a surprising new hit.
Other projections align closely, with Murphy’s Multiverse estimating a range of $22 million to $27 million, while TheWrap suggests independent trackers see at least $25 million with a chance of exceeding $30 million. Earlier presale data had hinted at an even more dramatic outcome, with some trackers forecasting a weekend total of $40 million to $50 million after North American ticket pre-sales surpassed $10 million in the days leading up to the release, though that enthusiasm has cooled slightly as the opening weekend approached.

The new footage isn’t merely a marketing tactic; it’s designed to enhance the narrative connection between the two films. ‘Doomsday’ director Joe Russo emphasized that it will create a “natural progression from Endgame into Doomsday,” linking it to other storylines that have unfolded in the franchise since 2019. He even described ‘Endgame Encore’ as “required viewing” for fans following the overarching story leading up to December’s release.
In addition to Marvel’s own audience, ‘Endgame Encore’ is also contending with three new releases vying for third place, including Brad Pitt’s survival adventure ‘The Heart of the Beast,’ Robert Pattinson’s ‘Primetime,’ and the animated family film ‘Forgotten Island,’ each expected to earn between $15 million and $20 million.

If the re-release performs at the higher end of its projections, it could significantly narrow the gap between ‘Endgame’ and ‘Avatar’ in the all-time worldwide box office rankings. Currently, ‘Endgame’ stands at $2.799 billion globally, while ‘Avatar’ has reached $2.9237 billion across its various re-releases, leaving a difference of about $124.3 million between the two films.
With a robust preview total already secured and positive word-of-mouth circulating, ‘Endgame Encore’ appears ready to demonstrate that even a film released seven years ago can still generate significant excitement at the box office.
