This year has seen a delightful box office rivalry between Marvel’s iconic team-up and a local comedy featuring four detectives in a nursing home. The recent release of ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ in Indonesia has reignited this friendly competition, and it did so with a head start compared to the rest of the globe.

Indonesian theaters began showcasing the re-release on September 23, two days ahead of its September 25 launch in the United States. It premiered in Cinema XXI, CGV, Cinepolis, and FLIX, offering various formats such as 2D, IMAX, ScreenX, and 4DX, with ticket prices ranging from Rp50,000 to Rp150,000.

This isn’t just a simple rerun of the 2019 film. The Encore version runs 185 minutes, approximately four minutes longer than the original, featuring a special opening and additional footage that connects the narrative to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. IMAX and Infinity Vision screenings also provide an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming sequel.

How did the opening day fare? According to data platform Cinepoint, ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ attracted 131,692 admissions across 2,108 showtimes on its first day, signaling that the Avengers had assembled once more.

This figure is significant, especially considering what transpired earlier this year. ‘Agak Laen: Menyala Pantiku!’ had surpassed ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to become the most-watched film ever in Indonesian cinemas, reaching 10,980,141 tickets by mid-March. It concluded its run with 11,000,866 admissions, while ‘Avengers: Endgame’ had 10,976,338 from its original release.

Adding the Encore’s opening day to that original count brings ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to approximately 11.1 million admissions, reclaiming the top spot from the comedy. This news spread quickly on Reddit’s r/boxoffice community, where users noted that the re-release had restored Marvel’s overall admissions record after just a few months in second place.

It’s important to keep the debut in context. It does not set an all-time opening-day record in Indonesia, which still belongs to ‘Dilan 1991’ with around 800,255 viewers in 2019, while ‘Agak Laen: Menyala Pantiku!’ opened with 272,846 admissions from 3,722 screens.

The film that briefly held the crown has its own narrative. ‘Agak Laen: Menyala Pantiku!’ was crafted by Muhadkly Acho, produced by Imajinari, and premiered on November 27, 2025, as a standalone sequel to ‘Agak Laen’. It features podcast hosts Bene Dion, Oki Rengga, Boris Bokir, and Indra Jegel as police officers who go undercover in a nursing home to solve a murder.

For local cinema, the earlier upset carried significant weight. The Jakarta Post noted that the comedy’s success demonstrated that Indonesian films can attract massive audiences in theaters that were once dominated by Hollywood blockbusters. The return of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to the top spot adds a new chapter to this ongoing rivalry.

The Indonesian tally continues to grow. How far ‘Endgame Encore’ extends its lead over the comedy will depend on how long local cinemas choose to keep it on their screens.

Globally, the re-release has ambitious targets. Variety’s projections estimate a domestic opening weekend of $25 million to $28 million. ‘Endgame’ currently stands at $2.799 billion worldwide, leaving a $124 million gap to ‘Avatar’. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18.
