Marvel Studios’ decision to pair the theatrical return of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ with new footage from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has already shown to be a clever marketing strategy in the domestic market. However, the true test of the film’s box office potential was always going to be its reception from international audiences. With the re-release launching across numerous international markets at the same time, early indicators suggest that this strategy is yielding positive results on a global scale.

‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ debuted with over 18 million dollars on its first international Friday, according to box office analyst Jatinder Singh, bringing its cumulative overseas total to approximately 28 million dollars thus far. This performance builds on the presale momentum that had been accumulating across various territories leading up to the release.

Singh’s tracking data indicated that the international rollout has been solid overall, with particularly strong results in the UK, Latin America, India, China, and select European markets. The overseas opening totals are now projected to reach 60 million dollars, with a potential global weekend total exceeding 85 million dollars once all markets are fully accounted for.

Among individual markets, China led with an estimated 7 million dollars, reinforcing its position as one of the franchise’s strongest historical markets outside of North America. Following closely, Mexico contributed around 1.8 million dollars, while the UK added 1.7 million dollars to the overall international total.

Japan and Italy rounded out the next tier with 1.5 million dollars and 1.2 million dollars respectively, while both India and France each generated approximately 1 million dollars during the opening weekend. This broad-based strength across such a diverse range of markets highlights the re-release’s ability to attract audiences beyond its core North American fan base.

China’s performance is particularly noteworthy given the way the rollout unfolded there. The market began with fewer than 100 screenings during the film’s first two weeks before dramatically expanding to 11,000 and eventually 20,000 screenings in the days leading up to release, a scaling pattern that helped boost presale momentum heading into the opening weekend.

With ongoing updates from the film’s original 2019 run being incorporated into current tracking, industry estimates now suggest that ‘Endgame’s’ cumulative worldwide total could approach 2.9 billion dollars by the end of the weekend. This figure would place the film within striking distance of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar,’ which currently holds the all-time global box office record at approximately 2.92 billion dollars.

The gap between the two films has been steadily narrowing since ‘Endgame Encore’ began its theatrical run, driven by the four minutes of new footage that ties directly into ‘Doomsday’ and a marketing campaign centered around exclusive previews of the upcoming December crossover film. Whether ‘Endgame’ can completely close that remaining gap will likely depend on how well the re-release performs in the coming weekends, both domestically and internationally.

For a film that was originally released more than seven years ago, reigniting this level of box office competition underscores the significant cultural impact the Marvel brand continues to hold as it approaches one of its most significant crossover events yet.
