Bad News for Narnia Fans Greta Gerwig’s ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ Faces Major Delay
Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ has received a new release date, accompanied by a significant change in Netflix’s strategy for delivering the film to audiences globally.
Initially scheduled for an IMAX release over Thanksgiving, followed by a Christmas Day streaming debut, the film will now have a wide global theatrical release on February 12, 2027, with its Netflix premiere set for April 2.
According to Tudum, the delay was caused by an injury to a cast member that resulted in a six-week production halt, making the original Thanksgiving timeline unfeasible.
This marks a pivotal moment for Netflix, as it will be the first time the platform offers a film with a full theatrical release, moving away from its previous model of short exclusive runs or simultaneous streaming launches.
By shifting to February, Netflix allows for a broader IMAX release and a longer theatrical run before the streaming debut, steering clear of the competitive Thanksgiving period filled with major releases.
Sneak previews in IMAX will commence on February 10, just two days prior to the global opening. This strategy indicates Netflix’s intent to treat the film as a significant theatrical event, with IMAX’s involvement underscoring the industry’s support for this release.
The film features newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell, alongside a stellar cast that includes Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep.
Streep lends her voice to Aslan, the cosmic lion whose song brings the world of Narnia to life. The original score is being crafted by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who previously collaborated with Gerwig on ‘Barbie’.
Gerwig has expressed deep enthusiasm for the project. In a statement via Netflix Tudum, she shared her lifelong connection to the source material, highlighting that the idea of a lion singing a world into existence has been close to her heart since childhood, and that bringing it to life on screen is “the honor of a lifetime.”
The adaptation takes a visually striking direction, with leaked set images indicating a shift from the Victorian London backdrop of C.S. Lewis’s novel to opulent post-war 1950s settings. The three ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ films from the 2000s collectively earned over $1 billion at the box office, setting a high bar for this new installment in the franchise. With Gerwig leading the project and Netflix committing to its most ambitious theatrical strategy yet, both the pressure and anticipation are immense.
