Brad Pitt’s ‘Heart of the Beast’ Proves He’s Still a Major International Box Office Draw
Survival thrillers typically don’t dominate the conversation like superhero franchises or long-standing blockbusters, but occasionally one rises above the rest due to sheer star power. That’s the case with Brad Pitt’s latest film, which is making waves in theaters.
In ‘Heart of the Beast’, Pitt reunites with director David Ayer for the first time since their 2014 war drama ‘Fury’. This time, they trade tank battles for a more intimate narrative centered on survival in the wilderness. Such reunions between established stars and directors often spark curiosity, even if the premise appears deceptively simple.
This curiosity is translating into box office success, as ‘Heart of the Beast’ earned $30.1 million internationally this past weekend. France led the charge with $3.8 million, followed closely by the United Kingdom at $2.7 million, underscoring Pitt’s continued appeal to audiences beyond North America.
The film follows James Belmont, a retired Army Special Forces officer portrayed by Pitt, who finds himself stranded in the Alaskan wilderness with his combat dog, Odin, after a plane crash. The narrative heavily relies on the bond between Pitt’s character and Odin, played by a German Shepherd named Uber, making it a uniquely stripped-down showcase for a star of Pitt’s caliber.
This minimalist approach turned out to be more challenging than Ayer initially expected, especially compared to the large-scale battle scenes they tackled in ‘Fury’. “It was a bigger challenge than I understood going into it,” Ayer shared with IndieWire on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “I really didn’t know what I was in for.”
A significant part of that challenge involved working with Uber, who required extensive training and bonding time with Pitt before filming could commence. The production reportedly conducted dog auditions and chemistry tests to find the perfect canine performer, ultimately choosing Uber, a former search-and-rescue dog brought out of retirement specifically for this role.
The investment in the man-and-dog relationship seems to be paying off both critically and commercially, as ‘Heart of the Beast’ has received strong reviews following its premiere at the San Sebastián International Film Festival earlier this month. Early reactions have positioned it among the better-reviewed films in both Pitt’s and Ayer’s filmographies.

The film’s international rollout followed its domestic release on September 25 from Paramount Pictures, allowing ‘Heart of the Beast’ to expand globally in a staggered manner typical for major theatrical releases during this time of year. France’s impressive opening weekend numbers were particularly noteworthy, as the film topped the country’s box office charts ahead of other new releases and holdovers.
This kind of international reception highlights Pitt’s enduring drawing power overseas, even outside the realm of traditional blockbuster franchises. For a film centered on such a quiet, character-driven premise, surpassing $30 million internationally in a single weekend is a remarkable achievement.
With strong reviews and solid international numbers, ‘Heart of the Beast’ appears poised for continued success in theaters in the coming weeks. Whether it can maintain this momentum domestically remains to be seen, but its international debut suggests audiences are responding positively to Pitt and Ayer’s intimate survival story.

Given how rare it is for a film of this nature to perform so well internationally, ‘Heart of the Beast’ may become one of the more surprising box office stories of the fall season. It serves as a reminder that sometimes all a movie needs is a great actor, a great dog, and a compelling story.
