Few DC Universe projects have faced as much scrutiny as ‘Lanterns’, and with the finale just days away, anticipation is at an all-time high. The HBO series has transformed a small Nebraska town into the heart of one of the DCU’s most captivating mysteries, prompting fans to dissect every frame of the promotional material for hints.

Since its debut on August 16, 2026, ‘Lanterns’ has maintained a consistent weekly release schedule. The series pairs John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre, with seasoned Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. The first season consists of 8 episodes, with new installments airing every Sunday until October 4.

The excitement from the penultimate episode barely settled before the next promo dropped. The first trailer for the season finale was released by DiscussingFilm on September 28, quickly amassing over 615,000 views. This under-40-second clip was initially shared by DC Film News on X.

The trailer’s focus is significant, centering on fear—the driving emotion behind the Yellow Lantern Corps in DC Comics lore. This suggests that one Green Lantern’s journey may not be over, and a fear-driven force is on the horizon.

This theme is not coincidental. John was raised by parents who instilled a sense of fearlessness in him from the age of five. Fear has subtly woven through his narrative since the outset.

Hal’s background adds another dimension. He trained under Thaal Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen), who turned rogue after being consumed by yellow fear energy. Sinestro’s actions led to the death of one of the twelve Guardians during a failed coup, resulting in his expulsion from the Corps.

Two pivotal characters are set to influence the finale. Sinestro is expected to play a more significant role, while Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner returns for his second appearance this season. This brings a wealth of cosmic firepower to a series that has largely focused on Earth.

The narrative builds on previous developments. In Episode 7, John and Hal’s hologram uncovered a portal to another planet hidden within Hal’s voice-locked storage vault, leading them to confront Sinestro. The episode also hinted at a Jordan family history of depression, raising suspicions that Hal may have died by suicide.

Despite the progress, the central mystery remains unresolved. The enigma surrounding Hal Jordan’s death in Rushville, Nebraska, looms large as the series approaches its conclusion. The finale promises to unravel the mystery of Rushville, what transpired with Sinestro, and the identity of the culprit, tracing back to a 2016 Manhunter incident.

The creative team behind the series is a familiar one. Co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King penned the finale, just as they did for the pilot. Having the same writers bookend the season should provide a satisfying sense of closure.

The broader implications for the DCU are already sparking speculation. Fans are eager to see if the Yellow Lantern Corps will be integrated into the larger DCU, and it’s uncertain whether the finale will set the stage for John and Guy’s upcoming roles in ‘Man of Tomorrow’ in 2027. One comment under DiscussingFilm’s post even speculated whether John is about to recite his oath.

Questions also linger about what follows. The finale, titled “Dirt and Stars,” is set to premiere on Sunday, October 4, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max. While HBO has yet to confirm a second season, a writers’ room has reportedly opened for a potential continuation, according to Lindelof.

The stakes feel elevated due to the franchise’s past. Given Green Lantern’s mixed live-action history, the positive audience reception is seen as a testament to the show’s quality. A strong finale on Sunday could significantly enhance that reputation.
