‘Broken Sword’ Movie Adaptation in Development From ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Writer
A film adaptation of the beloved mystery-adventure video game series Broken Sword is officially in the works.
As reported by Variety, the project is being developed by Revolution Software, production company Story Kitchen, and writer Evan Spiliotopoulos, known for his work on Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast.
The Broken Sword franchise, created by Charles Cecil, debuted in 1996 with The Shadow of the Templars. The games follow American tourist George Stobbart and French journalist Nicole Collard as they navigate global conspiracies linked to ancient secrets and religious history. Over the years, the series has gained a reputation for its compelling storytelling and puzzle-driven gameplay set in various European locales.
Active for nearly three decades, the franchise has captivated over 10 million players worldwide and is recognized as one of the pioneering examples that shaped modern narrative-focused video games. Recently, the series has experienced a revival, including a successful Kickstarter campaign for a remake titled Smoking Mirror Reforged, which raised nearly $1 million.
The upcoming film will be penned by Evan Spiliotopoulos, whose previous credits include The Unholy, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Snake Eyes. The story aims to bring the game’s blend of mystery, history, and globe-trotting adventure to a broader audience in a live-action format.
Production is being managed by Story Kitchen, a company dedicated to developing film and TV adaptations of popular games. Their upcoming projects also include work on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and Amazon’s Life Is Strange series. They are collaborating with Charles Cecil and Noirin Carmody from Revolution Software to produce the Broken Sword movie.
Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg expressed their commitment to honoring the essence of the original games. They stated, “Very few franchises of this era have stayed relevant, premium, and loyal to the intelligence of their audience. ‘Broken Sword’ has done all three. Our work here isn’t to adapt a game into a film. It’s to move a world that has been building for three decades into the next medium it deserves, working hand-in-hand with the people who built it.”
Charles Cecil also praised the collaboration, highlighting the team’s creative approach. He remarked, “Story Kitchen came to this project with a deep passion for the IP. That’s rare. The creative conversations have been about translating what ‘Broken Sword’ is, rather than what it can be made to look like. I am hugely excited to be working with Story Kitchen and Evan.”
Currently, the film is in the early stages of development, and no release date has been announced.
