The first trailer for ‘By Any Means’ has dropped, offering viewers a glimpse into a gripping historical crime thriller featuring Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Directed by Elegance Bratton, the film draws inspiration from true events that unfolded in the 1960s in the American South.

Set against the backdrop of Mississippi during a tumultuous period of racial violence and civil rights activism, the movie showcases an unlikely partnership between two contrasting characters. Wahlberg portrays Gregory Scarpa, a real-life mafia hitman, while Abdul-Mateen II takes on the role of FBI agent Wayne Strider. Together, they navigate the investigation of civil rights leaders’ murders and confront the Ku Klux Klan.

The narrative revolves around their uneasy collaboration. Strider, a federal agent, attempts to operate within a deeply flawed and racist system, while Scarpa, a violent criminal, has his own motives. This pairing serves to highlight the complexities of seeking justice in a world where official systems often fail to safeguard individuals.

Director Elegance Bratton, recognized for ‘The Inspection’, shared with Entertainment Weekly that the film explores “justice moving through corrupted systems,” and described it as “muscular, entertaining, and haunted.” These insights reflect the film’s tone, which intertwines intense action with significant real-world themes.

The screenplay was penned by Sascha Penn, known for his work on ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’. The film strives to merge crime thriller elements with historical context, particularly focusing on the violence that surrounded civil rights activism in the 1960s.

A pivotal character in the story is civil rights leader Vernon Dahmer, portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito. Dahmer was instrumental in assisting Black citizens with voter registration in Mississippi and became a target for the Ku Klux Klan, ultimately losing his life in 1966 after his home was firebombed. Bratton noted that Dahmer’s family was closely involved in the film’s production, with his daughter Bettie Dahmer present during the filming of the attack scene.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mark Wahlberg discussed the film, highlighting the strong reactions from early test screenings. He described the audience’s response as overwhelmingly positive and referred to the film as “one of the great revenge thrillers.”

Wahlberg also talked about his physical transformation for the role, which included changes to his appearance to closely resemble the real Gregory Scarpa. Early images depict him with longer hair, tinted glasses, and a style reflective of the period.

The supporting cast features Nicole Beharie, Josh Lucas, Ethan Embry, LisaGay Hamilton, LaChanze, and David Strathairn, each contributing to the broader narrative of law enforcement, civil rights, and community resistance during a violent chapter in American history.

‘By Any Means’ is scheduled for theatrical release on September 4. According to the studio and early press reports, the film aims to blend historical accuracy with a high-octane thriller format, emphasizing moral dilemmas, uneasy partnerships, and the quest for justice in a divided society.
