Glen Powell’s unexpected sports comedy captured attention upon its debut, blending college football antics with a premise so outrageous it seemed almost implausible. A disgraced quarterback donning elaborate prosthetics to sneak back onto the field feels like a sketch concept, which is precisely where the idea originated.

This backstory hasn’t hindered ‘Chad Powers‘ from developing into a show with genuine emotional stakes, particularly after Season 1 concluded with Coach Ricky Hudson uncovering Russ Holliday’s hidden identity. Season 2 immediately picked up this thread, refusing to revert to simple disguise comedy.

Now, with the Season 2 finale titled “12th Quarter” available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, the season has presented its most chaotic moments yet, culminating in revelations, a nail-biting football finish, and a cliffhanger that leaves Russ’s secret precariously hanging. Here’s how it all unfolded.

Throughout the season, Russ’s teammate Gerry grew increasingly suspicious of Chad, even going so far as to stalk the quarterback and those close to him. While he didn’t realize Russ was concealed behind a prosthetic mask, he sensed something was amiss, especially after witnessing Coach Ricky sneaking around and catching a glimpse of Chad’s supposed father, “Howard Powers,” sporting an obvious wig and prosthetic nose at the homecoming banquet.

That suspicion reached a boiling point in the penultimate episode, “11th Quarter,” when Gerry broke into Russ and Danny’s home, attacking Danny and stealing the prosthetics used to disguise Russ as Chad. The finale opens in the aftermath of that break-in, with Russ meeting Gerry at a movie theater, where the backup quarterback laid down his demands: throw the final regular season game against Texas on purpose, take the blame for planting a fake gun in Gerry’s locker, and Gerry would keep quiet about Chad’s true identity.

A heartbroken Russ reluctantly accepted Gerry’s terms, but Ricky and Danny were not deceived by his forced composure. Once Ricky learned the full extent of Gerry’s scheme, including the $200,000 bet hinging on Chad playing a historically poor game, she made a decision of her own.

Despite having just accepted a coaching position at Syracuse, Ricky opted to assist Chad in winning, utilizing old game footage from Russ’s Oregon days to call trick plays that brought the Catfish back into contention. It worked, leading to a tense final sequence where Chad had to decide between adhering to Gerry’s rules or breaking them to score the winning touchdown.

After a heartfelt conversation with Coach Hudson, who expressed pride in Chad for the season regardless of the outcome, Chad ran the ball in for a genuine, unrigged victory. Gerry stormed the field in a fit of rage, only to be knocked out cold by Tricia Yeager’s security guard, who revealed that Tricia was already aware of Chad’s true identity, having learned it from Danny, and had negotiated to keep Russ and Danny “safe” by relocating them to her ranch.

The episode’s final twist occurs in the locker room, where Ricky and Russ share an emotional moment as she assists him in fixing his prosthetic before her anticipated move to New York. Overwhelmed with emotion, Russ confesses his love for her, and the two share their first kiss, which quickly escalates into a passionate moment as Ricky begins removing the remaining prosthetic from his face.

Just before the reveal can fully take place, Coach Hudson bursts into the locker room, and the episode cuts to black as Russ turns away to conceal his slipping mask. It remains deliberately ambiguous how much Hudson actually witnessed, setting up a significant question mark for any potential future season.

Several storylines remain unresolved, including whether Hudson recognized Russ, if Ricky will still depart for Syracuse after her locker room encounter with Chad, and whether Gerry is truly out of the picture for good. With numerous plot threads still active, there’s clearly more football to be played if ‘Chad Powers’ is renewed for a third season.
