Chadwick Boseman’s Widow Responds in Estate Dispute, Claims She’s Given Millions
Six years after the world mourned the loss of Chadwick Boseman, the legacy of the ‘Black Panther’ star has become the focal point of a contentious family dispute. The Oscar-nominated actor passed away in August 2020 after a private battle with colon cancer, leaving behind an estate embroiled in a legal struggle among those who loved him dearly.
At the center of this conflict is Taylor Simone Ledward Boseman, his widow, who married him shortly before his death and was later appointed as the administrator of his estate. Since Boseman died intestate, a Los Angeles court decreed that 50 percent of the estate would go to Ledward Boseman, with the other half divided between his parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman.
Recently, in newly filed court documents obtained by TMZ, Ledward Boseman has strongly countered allegations from her late husband’s brothers, Derrick and Kevin Boseman, who are seeking to have her removed as administrator. According to the filing, Ledward Boseman asserts that she has provided Carolyn and Leroy Boseman with over $1.7 million since 2022, including a $1.5 million payment in May 2023, an additional $260,000 later that year, and just over $4,000 in December 2024. She also claims to have voluntarily contributed $300,000 of her own funds to Derrick’s children.
These figures are her direct rebuttal to a petition filed by Derrick and Kevin back in July, accusing her of not distributing the remaining half of the estate despite a court order from 2022 requiring her to do so. Their original filing alleged that Ledward Boseman had “never fully distributed” the assets owed to Chadwick’s parents and had kept the family “in the dark” about the estate’s financial matters. The brothers also claimed she continued to “exert unilateral control” over the estate, denying their parents “closure or participation in decision-making.”
The estate itself is substantial, reportedly comprising cash, an IRA account, and approximately $3.3 million in stock related to Chadwick Boseman, Inc., along with royalties, residuals, and intellectual property rights associated with his image and legacy. Derrick and Kevin have contended that there are additional undisclosed assets beyond what has been accounted for, including a previously unnamed bank account and outstanding SAG-AFTRA residual payments dating back to 2020.
When the brothers initially made their petition public in July, they framed it as a quest for transparency rather than a personal attack. They stated in a joint statement that their parents had “sought clarity regarding matters connected to the estate” for years and that the action was filed “on behalf of, and with the authority of” Leroy and Carolyn. The family expressed their intention to “respect the legal process while remaining focused on the facts set forth in the petition.”
In response, Ledward Boseman has not remained silent. Along with her new financial disclosures, she dismissed the brothers’ claims, asserting that she has been faithfully executing her late husband’s wishes regarding the management of his estate.
This legal drama unfolds at an emotionally charged time for Boseman’s family, with tensions reportedly extending beyond financial matters into disputes over his broader legacy. For fans who remember Boseman as the dignified and larger-than-life King T’Challa in ‘Black Panther,’ witnessing his loved ones embroiled in a legal battle in Los Angeles Superior Court serves as a poignant reminder of how complicated grief and inheritance can become in the absence of a will. With both sides now officially on record in court filings, the struggle over who controls Chadwick Boseman’s legacy appears far from resolved.
