Charles Melton has spent the last three years evolving from a former ‘Riverdale’ cast member into one of the industry’s most sought-after dramatic talents. His journey began with Todd Haynes’ ‘May December’ and has continued with his acclaimed performance in the second season of ‘Beef,’ which recently garnered him two Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Supporting Actor, and recognition as an executive producer on a season that achieved a total of 16 nominations.

This rising momentum has positioned Melton as a prominent name linked to Marvel’s rebooted ‘X-Men‘ franchise, which is currently in development under ‘Thunderbolts’ director Jake Schreier. His connection to the project stems from his collaborative history with Schreier and ‘Beef’ creator Lee Sung Jin, both of whom are now leading the new mutant film alongside writer-producer Joanna Calo.

In a conversation with The Playlist ahead of the D23 Convention in Anaheim, where fans anticipate a major ‘X-Men’ casting announcement, Melton addressed the rumors regarding a potential Beast casting. He shared that his level of openness about the project varies day by day, stating, “I think I believe in Jake and Sunny so much, and I would love to work with them again, and many more times.” He emphasized that both men are aware of his enthusiasm.

Melton also provided a humorous and self-aware perspective on how closely he has been tracking the online discussions about his possible involvement. He confessed to trying to limit his self-Googling to about 20 times a day instead of 50, jokingly retracting that number further during the interview.

His eagerness to collaborate again with Schreier and Lee Sung Jin aligns with comments he made in a previous interview while promoting Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Her Private Hell.’ When asked about the Beast rumors, he playfully redirected the question, asking, “Wow. Who’s directing?” This was especially ironic as Schreier, his collaborator on ‘Beef,’ is the one leading the project. He described the potential opportunity as extraordinary, calling it a dream not once, but twice.

Sophie Thatcher, Melton’s co-star in ‘Her Private Hell,’ who has also been part of the ‘X-Men’ casting speculation, offered a similarly open yet vague response regarding her own potential involvement. She admitted she hadn’t heard the rumors but remains open to studio work if the material is genuinely substantial.

For Melton, this renewed attention comes at a particularly high-profile moment in his career, with Schreier’s ‘X-Men’ currently confirmed to feature Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Kit Connor as Cyclops. Reports have indicated that Melton was once viewed as the frontrunner for the role of Beast, though conflicting industry chatter has created some uncertainty about the current state of negotiations.

As Marvel’s D23 presentation is expected to unveil significant casting announcements for the project, Melton’s candid remarks indicate he is just as invested in the speculation as the fans following along online. Whether he is officially revealed as Hank McCoy at the convention or if the rumors shift elsewhere, his enthusiasm for reuniting with Schreier and Lee Sung Jin is evident regardless of the outcome.

For such a highly anticipated franchise, having a rising Emmy-nominated actor openly excited about joining only amplifies the buzz leading into what could be one of Marvel’s most significant casting announcements in years.
