The streaming landscape can be quite unpredictable. Films and series that appear to flop in theaters can unexpectedly become major hits online, while others that perform well at the box office may fade into obscurity.

Viewer preferences shift rapidly, and streaming platforms can breathe new life into older or overlooked titles. This phenomenon is evident with Christian Bale’s ‘The Bride’, which has recently gained significant traction on HBO Max.

‘The Bride’ is a 2026 gothic romance film directed and written by Maggie Gyllenhaal. It draws inspiration from Mary Shelley’s iconic ‘Frankenstein’ novel and the 1935 film ‘Bride of Frankenstein’. The cast includes Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz. The film premiered in London on February 26 before its U.S. release by Warner Bros. Pictures on March 6.

The film presents a dark and stylized retelling of the classic Frankenstein narrative, exploring themes of creation, identity, and control. Jessie Buckley takes on a dual role, while Christian Bale plays a significant supporting character. The score is composed by Hildur Guðnadóttir, with cinematography by Lawrence Sher. It was produced by First Love Films and In the Current Company.

According to Box Office Mojo data, the production budget for ‘The Bride’ ranged between 80 to 90 million dollars. However, its box office performance was disappointing, grossing only about 24 million dollars globally, marking it as a financial failure for the studio.

Despite its lackluster theatrical performance, the film found renewed success in the streaming arena. Industry insiders were surprised when it climbed to the top of the HBO Max charts. Data from FlixPatrol indicated that it reached number one globally on the platform, sparking a new wave of interest among viewers who missed it in theaters.

The critical reception was mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, 57 percent of critics provided positive reviews from a total of 325 reviews. The consensus stated: “Concocted with all the restraint of a mad scientist’s experiment, ‘The Bride’ lurches in so many different creative directions that the overall effect is both sloppy and inspired.” On Metacritic, the film received a score of 55 out of 100, indicating average reviews. CinemaScore audiences rated it a C+.

Some critics highlighted the performances. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw awarded it four out of five stars, noting, “Jessie Buckley is electrifying as frizzy-haired, black-tongued monster’s wife.” Conversely, other critics were less favorable. Donald Clarke of The Irish Times described it as “loud. It is brash. It is willfully discordant. But it also, alas, exhibits a contrasting strain of clunkiness that would be more at home in an undergraduate revue.”

Variety’s Owen Gleiberman likened it to other chaotic films, stating it felt like a blend of styles that never fully coalesced, remarking that it “doesn’t move.” Other reviews echoed this sentiment, labeling it messy and inconsistent in tone and structure. Time magazine’s Stephanie Zacharek characterized it as “an intellectual joyride without the joy.”

Although ‘The Bride’ faced challenges in theaters and received mixed reviews from critics, its impressive streaming performance has granted it an unexpected resurgence.
