Typically, blockbusters follow a familiar trajectory at the box office: a massive opening weekend followed by a sharp decline as the initial wave of moviegoers subsides. However, Christopher Nolan’s latest masterpiece has spent nearly two months demonstrating that this pattern doesn’t apply to every film, particularly when the director’s name carries the immense trust that Nolan has cultivated with audiences over the years.

‘The Odyssey’ debuted on July 17 with an impressive $123.5 million domestic opening, quickly establishing itself as one of the year’s biggest films despite its nearly three-hour runtime and R rating. The adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, led by Matt Damon, heavily relied on IMAX support from the outset, becoming only the second film in IMAX history to surpass $100 million in that format within just 10 days, following ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

This momentum has shown no signs of waning even now, nearly two months into its theatrical release. On its most recent Monday, ‘The Odyssey’ earned $1.03 million from 1,983 locations, extending its remarkable streak of consecutive $1 million-plus days to 60 and bringing its total domestic gross to $601.73 million.

This streak now stands as the longest ever recorded for an R-rated film, surpassing the previous record of 55 consecutive days set by ‘Obsession’ earlier this year. For a movie centered around a challenging subject and an adult audience, maintaining such daily consistency for two full months is a truly rare achievement in today’s theatrical landscape.

Universal has embraced this narrative throughout the film’s journey, with Jim Orr, the studio’s President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, attributing the film’s staying power to Nolan’s esteemed reputation. Orr remarked to Deadline that “The Odyssey is him operating at the peak of his powers,” a statement that encapsulates how thoroughly the film has exceeded typical expectations for a lengthy, R-rated historical epic.

This trust has translated into impressive numbers across the board. ‘The Odyssey’ became Nolan’s highest-grossing film of all time worldwide back in August, surpassing 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ and it currently ranks as the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, behind only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ both domestically and globally. With Nolan’s filmography collectively exceeding $7 billion worldwide, ‘The Odyssey’ has solidified its status as a defining entry in that catalog.

Previous projections had estimated the film’s likely final domestic total to be between $615 million and $630 million, but its ongoing daily consistency suggests that this range could rise even higher before its theatrical run concludes. Regardless of the final figure, ‘The Odyssey’ has already established itself as one of the most resilient box office performances of the year, R-rated or otherwise.
