Zack Snyder has been busy promoting ‘The Last Photograph’ at the Toronto International Film Festival this month, but his press tour has turned into something much more significant than a standard movie rollout. While addressing questions about his critics, political views, and future projects, Snyder has also revisited one of the most challenging periods of his career.

This difficult chapter revolves around the downfall of his original DC universe, which began with ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Batman v Superman’ but ultimately unraveled during the production of ‘Justice League.’ Following the tragic death of his daughter, Snyder stepped away from the film, leading Warner Bros. to bring in Joss Whedon for reshoots, resulting in a theatrical cut that was met with harsh criticism and effectively dismantled Snyder’s cohesive vision.

In a recent interview, Snyder disclosed that a former Warner Bros. executive has since acknowledged that the studio was mistaken in opposing his vision. Speaking with Variety, Snyder shared that the executive told him, “You were right about everything,” a moment he described as an unexpected form of closure years later.

The executive went on to confirm that the studio had resisted Snyder throughout the process, only to realize later that his instincts were correct. Snyder explained that this disagreement was not limited to ‘Justice League’ but extended to his broader vision for the DC universe and his filmmaking style, which clashed with the studio’s expectations at the time.

Snyder candidly reflected on how challenging that period was for him personally, noting that the release of the theatrical cut coincided with one of the toughest times in his life following his daughter’s passing. He revealed that he has never watched Whedon’s version of the film, as his wife and producing partner, Deborah Snyder, viewed it beforehand and advised him against seeing it.

This decision seems to have shielded Snyder from facing a version of his work that strayed significantly from his creative vision. The eventual release of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ years later, largely driven by dedicated fan campaigns, allowed audiences to experience his original concept, although Warner Bros. has since distanced itself from that continuity under the current DC Studios leadership.

Snyder expressed a level of understanding regarding the studio’s initial resistance, recognizing that the executives were safeguarding a highly valuable intellectual property and that their jobs depended on the franchise’s success. Nevertheless, receiving a direct acknowledgment that his creative choices were ultimately validated seems to have provided Snyder with a genuine sense of closure on a saga that has lingered for nearly a decade.

It remains uncertain whether this acknowledgment will lead to any future collaboration between Snyder and Warner Bros., especially considering the studio’s current trajectory under DC Studios leadership.
