Christopher Nolan has garnered a dedicated fanbase in Japan, making the country’s box office response to his films a crucial indicator that industry observers closely monitor. The anticipation for ‘The Odyssey’s’ release in Japan, which came nearly two months after its global debut, was particularly significant once the date finally arrived.

This release faced a notable challenge, as Japan’s 2026 box office calendar has been filled with major releases throughout the year. ‘The Odyssey’ had to compete directly with ‘Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island,’ a local sensation based on a popular manga and anime series that had been dominating the summer box office.

Despite this competition, ‘The Odyssey’ successfully debuted at number one in Japan, achieving an impressive $4.2 million during its three-day opening weekend, which included preview screenings. This performance surpassed the original theatrical debut of ‘The Dark Knight’ in the same market. For an R-rated, nearly three-hour original epic without any franchise recognition, this result is a remarkable achievement against strong local competition.

The opening weekend figures place ‘The Odyssey’ firmly within the context of Nolan’s previous box office performances in Japan. It significantly outperformed ‘Interstellar’s’ $1.6 million debut, ‘Oppenheimer’s’ $2.5 million, ‘Dunkirk’s’ $3 million, and ‘The Dark Knight’s’ $3.1 million, while falling just short of ‘Tenet’s’ $4.4 million opening and well behind ‘The Dark Knight Rises’s’ $5.7 million and ‘Inception’s’ $8.9 million debuts.

Beyond the initial numbers, the film’s daily performance has been particularly promising. On Sunday alone, it added an estimated $1 million, reflecting only a 16.7% drop from Saturday’s figures, which is a notably small decline for an opening weekend. This typically indicates strong word-of-mouth that can propel a film forward instead of a quick fade.

This positive word-of-mouth is also evident in audience ratings. ‘The Odyssey’ has achieved an impressive 4.4-star rating from Japanese viewers, marking the highest score of Nolan’s career in that market, a significant achievement considering his films have consistently performed well there.

On its opening day, ‘The Odyssey’ earned an estimated $2 million, which included $1.3 million from seven days of limited IMAX previews, easily surpassing ‘Oppenheimer’s’ comparable $800,000 preview earnings. This performance positioned ‘The Odyssey’ among the top opening days for any Hollywood release in Japan this year, trailing only a few of the country’s biggest tentpole films while outperforming several other major titles released earlier in the year.

With the film already surpassing $600 million domestically and recently becoming Universal Pictures’ highest-grossing release of all time worldwide, this strong debut in Japan adds further momentum to its ongoing ascent in the global box office rankings. Given how well ‘The Odyssey’ has maintained its audience week after week in territories that opened months earlier, there is good reason to anticipate similarly strong performance in Japan as it continues its run.

For a market known for its loyalty to Nolan’s films but also its unpredictable release schedule, achieving the top spot over a genuine local phenomenon is a notable accomplishment. It suggests that the film’s global staying power still has potential for growth, even at this stage of its theatrical journey. With no major competitors set to challenge it in the coming weeks, ‘The Odyssey’ seems well-positioned to continue its upward trajectory in Japan for some time.
