‘The Odyssey’ Breaks IMAX Records with Unprecedented Box Office Success
Christopher Nolan’s connection with IMAX has been a defining aspect of his filmmaking journey, dating back to 2008 when ‘The Dark Knight’ became the first Hollywood film to utilize IMAX cameras for select action scenes. Each film that followed advanced this partnership, but ‘The Odyssey’ has taken it to an entirely new level by being the first feature shot entirely with IMAX 70mm film cameras.
This groundbreaking achievement necessitated IMAX to create custom sound-dampening technology to make full-length film production feasible in this format, showcasing a genuine engineering challenge rather than a mere marketing strategy. The ambition of this project quickly translated into record-breaking box office figures once the film premiered, achieving the fastest release to surpass $200 million in global IMAX earnings within its first month.
Now, this momentum has led to a remarkable milestone. ‘The Odyssey’ has officially become the first film in history to exceed $500 million in ticket sales solely from IMAX screens, a feat no other movie, including 2009’s ‘Avatar,’ had approached. The film also achieved four consecutive weekends of earning over $50 million on IMAX screens worldwide, a record that no other IMAX release has matched even twice in a row.
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond praised this achievement, congratulating Nolan and his team for breaking the company’s long-standing box office record with at least a month still remaining in its IMAX run worldwide. Such a statement from the head of a company that has collaborated with numerous directors over the years highlights the uniqueness of this milestone.
‘Avatar’ held IMAX’s all-time revenue record for over 15 years until ‘The Odyssey’ came along, finishing its theatrical run with $271 million in the format. ‘The Odyssey’ surpassed that figure just weeks after its release and currently boasts approximately a $230 million lead over Avatar’s total lifetime earnings, a gap that seemed almost impossible given how untouchable that record once appeared.

Much of this ongoing success can be attributed to IMAX’s decision to extend the film’s premium format run well beyond a standard theatrical window. The true 70mm presentation, shown in just 41 locations worldwide at the impressive resolution favored by Nolan, has already generated millions on its own, with Los Angeles’s TCL Chinese Theatre setting a new record for the highest grossing title at any single IMAX location. IMAX has since prolonged the film’s run through September 30, providing it with an eleven-week theatrical window in this format.

This sustained performance has significantly boosted IMAX’s business as the year progresses. The company has highlighted ‘The Odyssey’ as a key factor in what it anticipates to be its best year ever, projecting around $1.4 billion in global box office revenue across its entire film network.
For a filmmaker known for pushing large-format cinema to its technical limits, ‘The Odyssey’ crossing the $500 million mark on IMAX screens alone signifies perhaps the clearest validation of that decade-long creative risk. With the extended theatrical window still in play, it’s entirely possible that this record will continue to rise before the film’s run ultimately concludes.
