Original, big-budget epics have struggled at the international box office for nearly two decades, with franchise sequels and established universes dominating the billion-dollar club. Studios have become increasingly cautious about investing nine-figure budgets in stories that audiences haven’t seen before in some form.

This hesitation made Christopher Nolan’s latest project seem particularly risky: a nearly three-hour adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem, featuring Matt Damon and lacking any built-in franchise recognition. However, ‘The Odyssey’ has spent the summer defying expectations at an astonishing pace.

Now, that success has reached a historic milestone. Nolan’s epic has crossed the $1 billion mark at the international box office, becoming the 17th film ever to achieve this feat overseas, and the first Hollywood film that is neither a sequel nor a remake to do so since ‘Avatar’ in 2009.

With its latest overseas tally, ‘The Odyssey’ has generated $1.014 billion in international territories, contributing to a remarkable $1.59 billion worldwide total, marking Nolan’s highest-grossing release to date. Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of distribution at Universal Pictures International, attributed the film’s staying power to its ability to “captivate audiences around the world” as it continues to play in theaters, according to Deadline.

The film’s overseas success has been impressively widespread across international markets rather than being concentrated in just a few regions. Its top ten markets include the United Kingdom and Ireland at $109.2 million, China at $92.7 million, France at $84.6 million, South Korea at $74 million, and Italy at $63.2 million, with Germany, Australia, Spain, Mexico, and India rounding out the list.

‘The Odyssey’ also opened to $264.1 million globally, marking the biggest debut of Nolan’s career, surpassing even 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ Its international opening alone reached $139.6 million, setting a record for his largest overseas launch ahead of both ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ under comparable market conditions.

This strong opening has led to record-breaking runs in numerous individual markets. The film achieved the biggest-ever Nolan opening in 52 separate markets, including Brazil, France, Italy, India, South Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Spain, and now stands as his highest-grossing title of all time in 75 markets worldwide.

The rarity of this billion-dollar milestone lies not only in the number itself but also in the company Nolan’s film now keeps. Every other title on the list of international billion-dollar earners in recent memory has been backed by an existing cinematic universe or franchise, from ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to ‘The Force Awakens,’ making an original standalone story crossing that threshold a true outlier in today’s box office landscape.

Additionally, ‘The Odyssey’ has become the highest-grossing film in IMAX history, generating over $457 million worldwide through the large-format exhibitor, which recently announced an extension of the film’s 70mm theatrical run through the end of September. This extension provides the film with even more opportunities to increase its totals as it continues to be showcased in premium formats globally.

Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside a talented ensemble that includes Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo, Tom Holland, and Jon Bernthal, ‘The Odyssey’ has emerged as one of 2026’s defining theatrical success stories. Its performance also contributes to a broader box office narrative this year, with the film joining ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in helping to push North American ticket sales toward levels not consistently seen since before the pandemic.

With its 70mm run extended and momentum showing little sign of slowing, ‘The Odyssey’ seems set to continue climbing even further up the all-time charts in the weeks to come.
