‘Clayface’ Letterboxd Rating Revealed Ahead of Theatrical Release
Letterboxd has emerged as a significant indicator in the film industry. A single rating on a movie’s page can influence discussions before critics share their opinions, particularly for films that aim to make a strong impression. This is especially true for DC Studios’ R-rated body horror film, which has just received its initial rating.
‘Clayface‘ is set to hit theaters on Friday, October 23, with the critics’ review embargo lifting on Wednesday, October 21, just a day ahead of Thursday’s preview screenings. Consequently, early reactions have primarily come from premiere audiences, fan-centric outlets, and social media. DC has shown confidence by organizing surprise screenings, including one for horror enthusiasts in the UK on October 19.
The first Letterboxd rating for ‘Clayface’ has arrived, debuting with an average score of 3.7 out of 5. The film, directed by James Watkins, runs approximately 109 minutes and follows Matt Hagen’s transformation from a Gotham street kid to a Hollywood star, only to face a horrific disfigurement at the hands of a crime boss.

Initial reviews indicate a mix of strong praise and some reservations. One of the first reviews awarded a 4-out-of-5 rating following the Los Angeles premiere on October 13. Another reviewer rated it 4.5 stars, stating it surpassed all expectations and that Gotham has never appeared so dark and unsettling.
However, some critiques were more tempered. One reviewer described it as a poignant, uncomfortable, and gory exploration of one of Batman’s more tragic villains, while noting that the film’s low budget occasionally holds it back. Another review offered a 3-star rating, likening it to a Sony Spider-Man villain movie and a less ambitious take on ‘Joker’. This range of scores reflects the expected variability for a film with a rating in the high 3s.
A score of 3.7 is respectable, but context is crucial. Early Letterboxd ratings typically come from enthusiastic premiere audiences, which can lead to inflated scores. The histogram shows ratings concentrated between 3.5 and 4.5, with relatively few low scores, suggesting the film resonates well with its target audience.
Nonetheless, there is a cautionary note. ‘Supergirl’ also enjoyed an early social media boost before full reviews were released, ultimately finishing with a 57% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $126.4 million worldwide against a budget estimated between $170 million and $186 million. DC lifted the social embargo on ‘Clayface’ about two weeks prior to its release, a move interpreted by some as confidence and by others as a familiar strategy.

What distinguishes ‘Clayface’ is its departure from the typical superhero narrative. It marks DC Studios’ first R-rated release, presenting a body horror tale with Tom Rhys Harries portraying Hagen and Naomi Ackie as the scientist responsible for his transformation. Early test screening reactions have drawn comparisons to ‘Joker’, ‘Vanilla Sky’, ‘The Substance’, and 2008’s ‘The Incredible Hulk’, with many noting that it earns its R rating through ample gore.
Director James Watkins, known for ‘Speak No Evil’, successfully turned a $15 million budget into a $76.7 million global box office with that film, solidifying his reputation as a master of building tension in horror. He conducted an extensive three-month audition process for Harries, which included two lengthy screen tests. The script was penned by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini.
As expectations for ‘Clayface’ are being discussed, Boxoffice Pro estimates the film will open between $23 million and $33 million against a reported $40 million budget, although ticket pre-sales indicate a debut closer to $20 million. It will also face competition from ‘Wildwood’ and ‘Klara and the Sun’, releasing the weekend after ‘Street Fighter’.
‘Clayface’ is the final DC film until ‘Man of Tomorrow’ next July, making strong word of mouth crucial for the studio’s momentum. At the premiere, producer Peter Safran confirmed that a script for ‘Swamp Thing’ is currently in development. If ‘Clayface’ performs well, it could pave the way for more unconventional DC projects.
In the coming days, we will see if the early acclaim holds up. Once critics’ reviews are published on Wednesday, the Rotten Tomatoes score and Metacritic rating will set the stage for the opening weekend. The average score on Letterboxd will also continue to evolve as general audiences share their thoughts.
For now, a 3.7 rating indicates that those who have seen it generally appreciate it. The real question is whether this enthusiasm will endure as it reaches a broader audience.
