Every October, several horror films aim to capitalize on the Halloween spirit, and this year, DC Studios is eager to join the fray. ‘Clayface’, the R-rated body horror from Warner Bros., has been generating interest as its theatrical release date approaches. Recent ticket sales are providing box office analysts with their first insights into its potential opening performance.

Directed by James Watkins and penned by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, the film features Tom Rhys Harries in the lead role. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan, with producers such as Matt Reeves, James Gunn, and Peter Safran involved. Originally set for a September 11 release, the film was shifted to October 23 without an official explanation.

A recent post on a Box Office Theory forum compares the presales of ‘Clayface’ at a specific theater chain to those of ‘Resident Evil’. According to the analysis, ‘Clayface’ is currently 66% behind the horror blockbuster at the same pre-release stage, suggesting an opening weekend of approximately $20 million.

While this data point is informative, it comes with some caveats. Presales from a single chain represent only a fraction of the audience, and horror fans are known for purchasing tickets closer to the release date. Additionally, comparing a DC character film to a record-breaking franchise entry sets a high standard.

Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ debuted with $60 million domestically, marking the largest opening in the franchise’s history, and earned $108.3 million worldwide in its first weekend. Being 66% behind such a strong launch still places ‘Clayface’ in a respectable position, which is why the projections are leaning towards the lower end of expectations.

In essence, trailing a successful film is not equivalent to falling behind a flop. The presales data appears more indicative of a modest, genre-driven debut rather than a warning sign.

Long-range forecasts from Box Office Pro estimate a domestic opening between $23 million and $33 million. Another projection from Box Office Theory, shared in September, suggested a range of $20 million to $26 million. Additionally, Box Office Theory anticipates ‘Clayface’ will open close to the $23.5 million it projected for ‘Digger’.

When viewed collectively, the new presales estimate aligns with the lower end of these projections, but it is not an outlier. Tracking suggests that general awareness of ‘Clayface’ lags behind similar releases, although interest among those familiar with the film is reportedly above average. This trend typically indicates a smaller yet dedicated audience, which aligns with the characteristics of a horror film.

‘Clayface’ reportedly had a production budget of about $40 million, which is modest by superhero film standards. Typically, a film needs to earn roughly double its budget to cover marketing and distribution costs, placing the break-even point between $80 million and $100 million worldwide. An opening near $20 million would not guarantee profitability, but it wouldn’t eliminate the possibility either.

A significant comparison is ‘Supergirl’, which opened to $37.1 million domestically and concluded with around $126 million worldwide, a result deemed disappointing. While the expectations for ‘Clayface’ are lower, the studio will still be looking for strong legs once audience feedback begins to circulate.

The release schedule is also competitive. ‘Street Fighter’ is set to debut the week prior on October 16 and is seen as a significant contender for the top spot, while ‘Klara and the Sun’, ‘Wildwood’, and ‘Wicker’ are among the films slated to open the same weekend as ‘Clayface’. A crowded field could restrict the film’s growth potential.

There is still time for the situation to evolve. Reviews and initial reactions are anticipated in the coming weeks, and a positive critical reception could boost walk-up sales in ways that presales may not reflect. The horror genre has been thriving this year, with ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’ cited as indicators of a healthy market.

For now, early figures suggest that ‘Clayface’ is on track for a solid yet unremarkable opening. Whether it can transform that into a sustained run may hinge less on its debut weekend and more on audience reactions to DC’s bold horror venture.
