Few animated series have transformed a peculiar premise into such a captivating slow burn as ‘Common Side Effects.’ Blending conspiracy-thriller tension, deadpan humor, and mind-bending mushroom lore, the Adult Swim show has garnered a dedicated fanbase since its debut. After nearly two years of anticipation, fans can finally look forward to more episodes.

Created by Joe Bennett (‘Scavengers Reign’) and Steve Hely (‘Veep’), and executive produced by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, the series follows former high school lab partners Marshall and Frances. They stumble upon a rare mushroom known as the Blue Angel, which has the potential to cure nearly any ailment. The first season premiered in February 2025, earning a Peabody Award, four Annie Awards, and nominations from the Emmys and the Independent Spirit Awards.

Recently, Adult Swim unveiled the first teaser for the second season, along with a confirmed release date. The show is set to return on Sunday night at 11 p.m. ET/PT on January 24, with episodes available for streaming the following day on HBO Max. This date announcement was made by Bennett and Hely during New York Comic Con.

The approximately 30-second teaser features Marshall and Frances attempting to remain completely under the radar. Their plan involves studying the mushroom’s side effects in secrecy and sharing their findings with 500 of the world’s leading scientists at prestigious institutions like Cambridge, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Connecticut. Their ultimate goal is to deliver a cure to humanity before they are discovered.

However, things take a turn when federal agent Copano tracks Marshall down in an unexpected getaway vehicle—a classic ice cream truck. The latter half of the teaser embraces the show’s signature atmosphere and awkward humor.

The first season concluded with the mushroom being declared illegal, leaving Marshall narrowly escaping a raid on a farm cultivating it. He fled to California, which, according to Hely, allows the second season to delve deeper into the narrative of individuals in hiding. The creators have described it as a slow-burn thriller set in a meticulously crafted Oregon town.

New episodes will also explore the mushroom’s history, providing viewers with a closer look at its lore. Meanwhile, DEA Agent Harrington’s partner, Copano, is recuperating from injuries sustained during the raid. At San Diego Comic-Con, the show teased a diner scene where the two agents reunite months after the season finale.

One of the series’ standout features is its grounded and cinematic aesthetic. Despite its fantastical elements, such as tiny white creatures in hallucinations and characters with oversized heads, the creators strive to maintain a sense of realism. This approach distinguishes it from conventional adult animation.

For the upcoming season, Bennett has cited his admiration for the Coen Brothers and 1990s thrillers like ‘The Fugitive.’ Hely has mentioned influences from ‘Indiana Jones,’ ‘National Treasure,’ ‘The Social Network,’ and ‘The Insider.’ This blend of adventure and procedural drama aligns perfectly with the show’s mix of paranoia and comedy.

Dave King reprises his role as Marshall, while Emily Pendergast returns as Frances. Martha Kelly voices Agent Harrington, Joseph Lee Anderson plays Agent Copano, and Judge also lends his voice to the series. The core cast has been instrumental in making the first season a success.

The creators remain dedicated to crafting unexpected narratives and their long-term mission of healing humanity through enigmatic mushrooms. This tongue-in-cheek tone contributes to the show’s charm, treating its absurd premise with just enough seriousness to maintain real stakes.

Adult Swim renewed the series in March 2025, and the production has provided fans with glimpses along the way. A work-in-progress session at the Annecy festival in June hinted that the new season would debut in 2027, followed by an extended first look at San Diego Comic-Con. Now, the date is officially confirmed.

This upcoming season marks the first new episodes in nearly two years, and the teaser indicates that the stakes will be higher. With fugitives on the run, agents closing in, and a world-altering discovery at stake, the series is set to amplify its cat-and-mouse dynamic. For viewers eager for another dose, the return is just around the corner.
