Dakota Johnson Discusses Filming Steamy ‘Verity’ Scenes With Anne Hathaway
Colleen Hoover’s ‘Verity’ has long been a hot topic among thriller enthusiasts. The 2018 novel is celebrated for its intricate plot, dark secrets, and unsettling atmosphere. Fans are eager to see how this gripping story translates to film, and the wait is almost over.
The movie adaptation is set to hit theaters on October 2, released by Amazon MGM Studios. Directed by Michael Showalter, who previously collaborated with Anne Hathaway on ‘The Idea of You’, the film features a screenplay by Nick Antosca. It stars Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett, with Hoover and Hathaway among the producers.
Recently, the actresses have shared insights into their experiences on set. Dakota Johnson’s steamy scenes with Anne Hathaway in ‘Verity’ have garnered significant attention, and Johnson has described the filming process as incredibly enjoyable.
In the film, Johnson portrays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer facing financial difficulties. Hartnett’s character, Jeremy Crawford, hires her to complete a successful book series authored by his wife, Verity, played by Hathaway, who is unable to write following a serious car accident. Lowen moves into the Crawford home to work on the unfinished novels.
As the story unfolds, things take a dark turn. While delving into Verity’s life, Lowen uncovers chilling autobiographical notes, causing the boundaries between reality, fiction, and fantasy to blur. Out noted that some of Lowen’s hallucinations and dreams include intimate moments with Verity, which delighted queer fans when they appeared in the trailer.
Showalter has discussed how the film’s sensual scenes were crafted. In a recent interview with Variety, he mentioned that he enhanced certain moments from the book to introduce more sexual tension. For instance, he highlighted an intimate hug between Lowen and Jeremy that he perceived as potentially charged.
Hathaway and Johnson further developed this idea. Showalter revealed that the actresses proposed transforming a make-out scene between Lowen and Jeremy into one with Verity, which he embraced. He described the improvised moment as sexy and transgressive, ultimately including it in the trailer.
This steamy content contributes to the film’s overall tone. Most outlets categorize it as an R-rated psychological thriller with erotic elements. Showalter explained that the sexual tension serves to enhance the story’s darker themes.
Johnson has also characterized her role in less romantic terms. In an interview with Deadline, she referred to Lowen as somewhat of a villain and expressed that the role was enjoyable. This blend of playful and ominous elements seems to be the film’s aim.

The film has been in the works for several years. Initially scheduled for May 15, 2026, Amazon MGM moved the release to October in July 2025, aligning better with the Halloween season for a dark thriller. Filming took place in early 2025, primarily in and around New York City.
Volker Bertelmann, who won an Oscar for ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, composed the film’s score. The budget is reported to be $40 million. Amazon showcased first-look footage at CinemaCon before releasing a teaser and a full trailer in August.
The three lead actors bring distinct energies to their roles. Hathaway embodies the enigmatic title character, Johnson takes the lead as the outsider drawn into a web of secrets, and Hartnett portrays the conflicted husband. Together, they form the central triangle of Hoover’s narrative.
Hathaway and Showalter’s previous collaboration on ‘The Idea of You’ has fostered a comfortable working dynamic, potentially allowing the actresses to feel free to experiment. Johnson also serves as an executive producer on the film, which may explain why some improvised moments made it into the final cut.
With only a few days remaining until the release, the promotional campaign is in full swing. Fans of the book are eager to see how the film addresses its most notorious twists, while others are simply curious about how much of the steamy content will be featured on the big screen.
Johnson’s comments suggest a cast that has built trust among themselves, which is crucial in a psychological thriller. If the final product captures that energy, it could become one of the season’s most discussed releases.
