Batman Returns, Tim Burton’s 1992 sequel to his 1989 hit movie, was a major hit and is still, by many, regarded as one of the best Batman movies of all time. The movie was a perfect blend of superheroism and Tim Burton’s aesthetic approach, creating a Shakespearean tragedy that brilliantly portrayed the characters in the movie.

One of these tragic figures was Oswald Cobblepot, also known as The Penguin, who is one of Batman’s most famous and enduring villains of all time.

In the movie, he was brilliantly portrayed by Danny DeVito, who recently looked back at the role, which left him with some happy memories.

The interview was actually a part of Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” special, in which DeVito and Colin Farrell, who portrayed Penguin in the recent hit series, talked about their lives and careers. Here is the video:

Of course, since the two of them are connected by the role of The Penguin, they talked about that as well. DeVito was asked to talk about his favorite moments from the filming of Batman Returns and he mentioned two interesting things.

“I went down to the zoo in San Diego, and they let me in the back to go hang out with the king penguins,” he said before continuing to praise the film’s depth. “I loved it because it gave you a freedom that burst out. For you too. You can go off the rails with something. The operatic element of Tim Burton’s Batman Returns was my favorite thing about it — the music and sets and the whole thing. The Shakespeare of it — ‘All the world’s a stage.’ Oswald’s realm and his penguins and his minions and his passion. I loved that.”

But, the Shakespearean atmosphere, as well as the visit to the zoo, was just one thing, and it is the more surprising one. The second one is less surprising.

“I had Michelle Pfeiffer. I’m not comparing anything, but I’m just saying, she was a goddess. If I knew she was going to be in a scene that day… I got all flushed,” DeVito said. “Put extra makeup on — ‘Give me another pound of makeup.’ It was very difficult.”

But, he praised her, telling she was “just so wonderful. And I lusted after her. It was Oswald that was lustful.” He added, “I kind of feel like she liked it. She liked Oswald.”
