Dark Sky Films just picked up all North American rights to Blood Shine, a chilling new folk horror feature from the talented husband-and-wife team of Emily Bennett and Justin Brooks. This film stands out with its unique mix of arthouse style and raw, visceral scares that push the boundaries of the genre. After a strong showing at festivals like Sitges Film Festival and Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, audiences can look forward to its release later in 2026. The deal highlights how independent horror continues to thrive with bold, creative visions.

At the heart of Blood Shine is Clara, played by Emily Bennett herself, a deeply religious woman who devotes herself to worshipping light through intense, private rituals in the quiet isolation of upstate New York. She soon crosses paths with Brighton West, portrayed by David Call, a struggling horror filmmaker seeking solitude to finish his latest script. What starts as an encounter quickly spirals as Clara pulls him deeper into her extreme spiritual world. Convinced her painful ceremonies hold the key to divine transformation, she leads him on a mind-bending journey exploring faith, the body, and the unknown.

The supporting cast brings even more depth to this unsettling story. Brendan Sexton III, known for his work in Russian Doll, joins alongside horror veterans Larry Fessenden from MaXXXine and Toby Poser from Hellbender. Their performances add layers of tension and authenticity to the film’s eerie atmosphere. Justin Brooks handled cinematography, capturing the haunting beauty and brutality, while Brian Spears delivered impressive practical gore effects seen in projects like Smile 2 and American Horror Story.

Behind the scenes, producers Alexander Schepsman, Garrett Fennelly, and Zeus Kontoyannis worked through Zeus Pictures, with Aaron B. Koontz contributing via Paper Street Pictures. Ashleigh Snead and Cameron Burns served as co-producers, and executive producers include Michael McFadden, G. Riley Mills, and Matt Sullivan. Greg Newman, executive vice president at Dark Sky Films, negotiated the distribution agreement on behalf of the company. Meanwhile, MPI Media Group is handling sales for other international territories at the European Film Market in Berlin.

Emily Bennett and Justin Brooks shared their enthusiasm about the partnership, noting how Dark Sky Films perfectly understood the film’s delicate balance between artistic depth and intense horror elements. They expressed excitement about bringing this bloody tale to wider audiences around the world. Greg Newman echoed that sentiment, praising the duo for crafting a daring and visually stunning piece that redefines folk horror while delivering genuine thrills.

Blood Shine promises to captivate fans who appreciate horror that lingers long after the credits roll, blending psychological unease with physical intensity in a fresh way. The film’s festival success already hints at its potential to become a standout in the genre. With Dark Sky Films’ track record in distributing thoughtful independent horror, this release feels like a perfect match. It is exciting to see such original voices getting the platform they deserve.
