‘Darkwing Duck’ Reboot Ordered at Disney+ Featuring All-Star Voice Cast
Disney+ has been on a mission to revive cherished animated classics from its vast library, breathing new life into beloved characters for both nostalgic fans and fresh audiences alike. This strategy has led to numerous successful revivals, but few have sparked as much enthusiasm as the latest confirmation.
For nearly six years, whispers and speculation about this project have circulated, with fans eagerly awaiting the return of the iconic crime-fighting duck. That anticipation has finally been rewarded with an official announcement and an impressive cast.
Disney+ has officially greenlit a series reboot of ‘Darkwing Duck’, featuring a voice cast that includes Mark Hamill in the titular role, alongside Seth Rogen, Lizzy Caplan, and Lilimar. Hamill will portray Drake Mallard, also known as Darkwing Duck, taking over from Jim Cummings, who voiced the character during its original run in 1991.
The series’ official logline reveals that Darkwing Duck has been trapped for 35 years in an alternate world unaware of his heroic past. A rebellious teen named Duckie, who is well-versed in his history as a hero, arrives to help the self-absorbed vigilante return to action, teaming up to confront old foes like Negaduck and Megavolt while reuniting with allies Launchpad, Gosalyn, and Morgana to save the universe.
Rogen voices Launchpad McQuack, while Caplan takes on the role of Darkwing’s adopted daughter, Gosalyn Mallard. Lilimar completes the main cast as Duckie, the newcomer whose arrival initiates the central plot of the show.
The series boasts a robust supporting cast, including Dan Stevens as Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis as Rosa, and Kathryn Newton as Firecracker, with Teo Briones as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores as Pondsy, Katie Rich as Officer Shanks, and Nat Faxon as Officer Webb.
Executive producers Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui lead the project, with Rogen producing through his Point Grey Pictures alongside Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, and Gabby Grantham. Original creator Tad Stones has also consulted on the development, ensuring a direct connection to the character’s roots.

Stones expressed his excitement about seeing his creation return after more than three decades. “Like every other fan of the original show, I’m excited to see Darkwing getting dangerous again in a whole new series,” Stones said, according to Variety.
The Point Grey team shared their enthusiasm in a joint statement regarding Disney’s decision to revive the character. “Disney said ‘Let’s get dangerous and we said ‘hell yeah,’” they remarked, reflecting the playful spirit that has characterized much of the marketing surrounding the announcement.
The original ‘Darkwing Duck’ aired for three seasons and 91 episodes from 1991 to 1992, as part of the syndicated Disney Afternoon programming block and on Saturday mornings on ABC. The series was celebrated for its comedic take on the superhero genre and received significant acclaim during its original run, solidifying Darkwing as a beloved figure in Disney’s animated history.
The character has remained connected to Disney’s broader animated universe, with Launchpad appearing in both the original ‘DuckTales’ and its recent reboot, alongside cameos from Darkwing and Gosalyn in that series. This continuity has kept the character relevant in Disney’s animated landscape, even without a standalone series until now.
This announcement follows Variety’s report in 2020 that a ‘Darkwing Duck’ revival was in the works at Disney+, making this official series order the culmination of a lengthy development journey. With such a stellar voice cast confirmed, anticipation for the project’s eventual premiere is already soaring among fans of the original show.
Given the strength of the voice cast and the character’s lasting legacy, this ‘Darkwing Duck’ revival is set to become one of Disney+’s most exciting animated offerings.
