Get ready for a new journey into the haunting world of Death Stranding. According to Deadline, an adult animated film is in the works, set to explore Hideo Kojima’s surreal universe in a fresh way. This isn’t a retelling of the game’s story but a brand-new tale crafted for the big screen. I’m thrilled to see this eerie, thought-provoking world take on a new form, and here’s what we know so far.

The film is being penned by Aaron Guzikowski, a screenwriter known for his gripping work on ‘Raised by Wolves’ and the 2013 thriller ‘Prisoners’. His knack for blending deep emotions with dark, philosophical themes makes him a perfect fit for Death Stranding’s vibe. Guzikowski has shared his excitement, saying he’s honored to dive into Kojima’s creation, a world he calls both beautifully dark and hopeful. He’s crafting an original story, so expect new characters and mysteries, not just a rehash of Sam Porter Bridges’ delivery runs.

Set in a post-apocalyptic America, the Death Stranding universe is unlike anything else. The 2019 game, directed by Kojima, follows a cataclysmic event that unleashed ghostly creatures called BTs and a strange rain, Timefall, that ages everything it touches. Players control Sam, played by Norman Reedus, a courier reconnecting isolated cities. The game’s mix of loneliness, connection, and surreal horror has captivated over 20 million players. Its cinematic feel, with stars like Mads Mikkelsen and Léa Seydoux, makes it ripe for a film adaptation.

This animated project is separate from a live-action Death Stranding movie being developed with A24, directed by Michael Sarnoski of ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’. Kojima Productions and Line Mileage, a newer animation studio, are behind this adult-oriented animated film. Kojima himself has hinted at wanting to push cinematic boundaries, aiming for something that could shine at festivals like Cannes or Venice. With Guzikowski’s emotional storytelling and animation’s limitless potential, this could be a wild ride.

The timing is perfect. ‘Death Stranding 2: On the Beach’ hits PS5 on June 26, 2025, with returning stars like Reedus and new faces like Elle Fanning. The sequel’s hype is building, and this film adds to the excitement. No release date for the animated movie has been set, but it’s in active development. I’m eager to see how animation brings out the game’s dreamlike landscapes and creepy BTs. This could be a fresh way to experience Kojima’s vision, whether you’re a gamer or just love bold storytelling.
