Denise Gough, who plays Dedra Meero in the Star Wars series Andor, recently opened up about her character’s fate in season 2. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gough discussed Dedra’s journey, her struggles, and the impact of losing someone close to her.

Dedra Meero is a dedicated and ambitious officer of the Empire. Throughout the series, she works hard to rise through the ranks. However, in the end, she finds herself alone, locked in an Imperial cell.

Her downfall comes after she tries to go after Luthen Rael to prove her worth to her superiors.

One of the most significant moments for Dedra is the loss of Syril Karn, portrayed by Kyle Soller. Syril dies during the Ghorman Massacre when he finally comes face-to-face with Cassian Andor. Just when Syril is about to kill Cassian, Carro Rylanz intervenes and saves Cassian.

Speaking about the impact of Syril’s death, Gough said, “He’s the only person who has ever seen Dedra Meero vulnerable. She described the aftermath of the loss as devastating for Dedra, saying, “There would’ve been a year of putting herself back together after what she feels is a disaster.”

Gough also talked about the contrast between the Empire and the Rebellion. She compared the Rebellion to a tribe where loyalty is key, while the Empire feels more like a gang that ultimately turns on its own.

Gough said, “It’s the difference between the tribe and the gang. The Rebellion is a tribe. It’s full of people who have loyalty at their core… But the gang will hurt you when you join, physically, and hurt you when you leave by discarding you.”

The final moments between Dedra and Luthen were also significant to Gough. She put a lot of thought into how Dedra would present herself in that crucial scene.

One small detail that mattered was whether Dedra would wear her hat. Initially, they considered removing it, but Gough later insisted on keeping it. “I remember talking about whether she would be wearing her hat or not,” she explained. “We were going to lose the hat. And then, I went home and I thought, ‘Of course she’s wearing her hat. She’s in full uniform. This is the moment she has been waiting for.’”

Gough’s insights reveal how deeply she thought about Dedra’s character, right down to the smallest details. Fans of Andor now have a better understanding of Dedra’s emotional journey and her ultimate fate in the series.
