Despite Being Lowballed by Disney Regarding His Salary, Jeremy Renner Says He is Open to Returning for Hawkeye Season 2: “We Got Into it Storywise”

Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is one of the fan-favorite characters in the MCU his last live-action appearance was in ‘Hawkeye’ show although he did recently take on the role of a voice actor in ‘What If…?’ Season 2 Episode ‘What If…Happy Hogan Saved Christmas.’ Jeremy clearly recovered enough to appear in the animated MCU but the question of his physical health has been under question for close to a year now.
On January 1, 2023, he was hospitalized following a severe accident at home involving his snowplow, resulting in blunt chest trauma and 30 broken bones. The snowplow, weighing 14,330 pounds, ran over him.
He was airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center, underwent surgery, and remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit. On January 17, he was discharged and returned home. Ten weeks later, he started walking with a cane, and doctors attributed his survival to his health and fitness.
For nearly a year, rumors have been circulating that Jeremy Renner will return for Hawkeye Season 2. The second season was reportedly planned to take place during Christmas and feature Clint Barton’s brother, Trickshot.
The storyline was also expected to focus more on Kate Bishop, given that she has taken over the mantle of Hawkeye in the MCU. Additionally, Kate is currently being recruited into the Young Avengers, also known as the Champions.
Renner recently addressed those rumors and confirmed that there have been plans for a second season, but nothing is set in stone.
We’ve got into it storywise … They still got to figure a lot of things out … I’m always game to do it.
This is surprising considering that Renner had some disputes with Disney over his salary. In a recent interview with High Performance Renner opened up about being offered a lower salary for the show’s second season. Renner revealed that Disney offered him half of what he earned for the first season.
“They asked me to do Season 2, and they offered me half the money. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money, and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount,’” Renner said.
Renner hinted that the pay cut might have been due to his serious accident
“I’m like, ‘I’m sorry? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season.’”
Renner clarified that the decision didn’t come from Marvel but rather from Disney’s accounting team. He felt insulted by the offer and decided to turn it down.
“This is not Marvel, mind you. This is like, just Disney, not even really Disney. It’s just the penny pinchers, the accountants. I told them to go fly a kite. I mean, just at the insult offer. So we didn’t see eye to eye on it.”
Despite the disagreement, Renner made it clear that he still loves the character and isn’t completely closing the door on returning.
“Sadly, I still love the character. I’d still love to do it, but I had to defend myself. I didn’t ask for any more money, mind you. Just pay me what I made the first season.”
He also addressed various rumors and theories surrounding the second season, including Season 2 being like ‘The Raid’ set in a single location, and Trickshot:
“Some of that’s true, I don’t know. We got into it a little bit, storywise & in just doing another season”
