Behind-the-scenes tales from blockbuster films often take on a life of their own, especially when a beloved industry icon is involved. What begins as an exciting rumor can quickly become accepted as fact, even when the reality is more nuanced.

This is precisely the case with a claim that has circulated since the production of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ began, prompting the film’s director to set the record straight.

Destin Daniel Cretton recently addressed the ongoing rumor that Jackie Chan’s stunt team contributed to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ during an interview, stating that the circulating story is inaccurate. In a conversation with TheWrap, Cretton clarified that while Chan visited the set, his stunt team was not responsible for the film’s fight choreography.

Cretton explained that the stunts were actually choreographed by Peng Zhang, who trained under the late stunt coordinator Brad Allan. “Jackie Chan’s stunt team did not work on the movie,” Cretton confirmed, addressing the confusion directly. “Chan did visit the set, but the stunts were handled by Peng Zhang, who studied under the late, great Brad Allan.”

Allan had strong ties to both Chan and Cretton. A long-time disciple of Chan’s stunt lineage, Allan was the second unit director for ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ which was his final project before his passing. Zhang, who collaborated with Allan on that Marvel film, brought the same training and choreography style to his prominent role in ‘Brand New Day.’

The misunderstanding seems to have originated from Chan’s comments about visiting the London set during production, where he mentioned that his stunt team was “busy filming Spider-Man” and that he acted as their action director. This statement, combined with Chan’s established collaboration with Cretton on ‘Shang-Chi,’ led to widespread reports suggesting his team had directly choreographed the film’s fight sequences.

Cretton’s clarification comes amid a wave of promotional appearances linked to the film’s record-breaking box office success, during which he has also addressed other rumors, including speculation about test screening reactions and the recent cancellation of Marvel’s ‘Wonder Man’ series. His proactive approach to correcting the narrative indicates a desire to maintain accuracy regarding his record-setting film amidst the surge of attention it has garnered.

Despite the confusion regarding Chan’s involvement, the film’s action sequences have received widespread acclaim for their grounded and practical style. Zhang’s choreography, influenced by Hong Kong cinema, has contributed to some of the most celebrated fight scenes in the franchise’s history. This creative lineage, even without Chan’s direct stunt team, continues the martial arts tradition that made the action in ‘Shang-Chi’ so memorable.

As ‘Brand New Day’ continues to lead global box office charts, Cretton’s readiness to publicly address misinformation about the production provides a rare, insightful glimpse behind the scenes of one of the year’s most significant cinematic events.
