Director Simon McQuoid Discusses Changes in ‘Mortal Kombat II’ After Fan Feedback
Simon McQuoid reveals that fan feedback from the first ‘Mortal Kombat’ significantly influenced key changes for ‘Mortal Kombat II’, particularly regarding female characters and the expansion of the story world.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, McQuoid emphasized that improving female representation was a top priority for the sequel. The team engaged in extensive discussions about this aspect during the movie’s planning phase.
McQuoid stated, “It was very important to me, and everyone, that the female representation got rebalanced: Kitana, Jade, Sindel.”
The sequel features several prominent female fighters from the video game series. Adeline Rudolph portrays Kitana, Tati Gabrielle takes on Jade, and Ana Thu Nguyen plays Sindel. Cast members have expressed enthusiasm about the increased presence of female characters compared to the first film.
Another significant addition is Johnny Cage, a beloved character from the Mortal Kombat games. Fans were disappointed by his absence in the 2021 film, but McQuoid explained that the team initially excluded him to avoid overshadowing the other characters.
Now, Johnny Cage officially joins the sequel, portrayed by Karl Urban. McQuoid and screenwriter Jeremy Slater crafted a narrative centered around a larger and more ambitious tournament between Earthrealm and Outworld.
McQuoid also noted that the sequel aims for a grander scale. He explained that collaborating with IMAX allowed the team to enhance the visuals and world-building significantly.
He remarked, “I wanted to be more expansive. I felt that ‘Mortal Kombat’ had this opportunity to be kind of big, grand, epic scale.” He also expressed a desire to incorporate more iconic elements from the franchise, including characters like Shao Kahn and Baraka.
Bringing Baraka to life posed a unique challenge for the filmmakers. McQuoid admitted, “I have no idea how we’re going to bring into life, but that is a great creative challenge.”
The sequel continues the narrative from the first movie, which focused on Cole Young’s discovery of his connection to Earthrealm’s fighters. This time, the plot delves deeper into the tournament as Earthrealm directly confronts Outworld.
Alongside Karl Urban, the cast features Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada, Martyn Ford, and CJ Bloomfield.

According to reports referenced in the ScreenRant interview, ‘Mortal Kombat II’ has already garnered a more favorable early response than the first film and is anticipated to perform well at the box office.
