Dominic Sessa Shares Surprising Insights About Anthony Bourdain in ‘Tony’ Biopic
Dominic Sessa anticipated gaining extensive knowledge about Anthony Bourdain while preparing for his role as the renowned chef and writer in the upcoming biopic ‘Tony.’ However, he was taken aback to learn that Bourdain’s greatest aspiration was never solely about becoming a chef.
Sessa, who portrays a young Bourdain in the film, initially perceived the late culinary icon primarily through his television career. In a conversation with E! News alongside co-star Stavros Halkias and director Matt Johnson, Sessa revealed that he did not fully grasp how much Bourdain cherished writing prior to achieving fame.
“I didn’t realize that, early on, his focus was writing and he really had a passion for that,” Sessa shared with E! News. “That was the thing that he saw himself doing and believed was his destiny.”
He further explained that Bourdain’s time spent in kitchens was a crucial part of his journey, as those experiences ultimately shaped the writer he became.
“Ultimately [it] was,” Sessa remarked about writing being Bourdain’s true calling, “but it wasn’t possible unless he had the experience he had in the kitchen and those years of his life as a chef and in New York and before that.”
Bourdain rose to become one of the most recognizable food personalities globally, but his journey was anything but conventional. Before he became a bestselling author and television host, he spent years in restaurants, which he later transformed into his acclaimed 2000 memoir ‘Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly.’
The new film takes a unique approach by focusing on a much younger Bourdain. Instead of chronicling his entire career, director Matt Johnson aimed to delve into the time before fame altered his life.

In an interview with E! News, Johnson elaborated that the creative team sought to understand the individual Bourdain was before he became an international sensation.
“We thought we could understand what it was like to be a young, struggling kid attempting to become Anthony Bourdain,” Johnson explained. “So that’s why it’s this summer and nothing else.”
The film follows a 19-year-old Bourdain during a summer job in Provincetown, Massachusetts, showcasing the early experiences that contributed to his future career.
For co-star Stavros Halkias, the project also became a deeply personal experience. Halkias plays a mentor figure in the film and noted that taking on this role shifted his perspective on his own life and career.
“It was fun to realize, ‘Hey man, you’re not a kid anymore. You’re being cast to be the guy who helps the kid,’” Halkias shared with E! News. “So stop thinking about yourself as a kid. You’re a grown man, grow up, for God’s sake.”
Halkias added that the role came at a time when he was already contemplating his own growth and direction.
“It really helped me to sort of rethink where I am and my own relationship to my work,” he stated. “And how I relate to other people.”
‘Tony’ offers another perspective on the complex life of Bourdain, who tragically passed away by suicide in 2018 at the age of 61. While many fans remember him for his adventurous travel shows and bold approach to food, the film centers on the young man searching for his identity before he became a global icon.
‘Tony’ is set to open in limited theaters on August 7, with a nationwide expansion on August 21.
