It has been twenty-five years since the release of the cult stoner comedy Dude, Where’s My Car?, a film that helped launch the careers of Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott. While the movie remains a nostalgic favorite for many, its screenwriter, Philip Stark, has moved on to a completely different profession.

Today, Stark works as a licensed marriage and family therapist, a far cry from his days writing jokes about aliens and lost vehicles. In a recent essay for The Hollywood Reporter, he reflected on the film’s anniversary and his unusual career trajectory.

Stark admitted that rewatching the movie recently was a difficult experience. He noted that he “cringed” at much of the humor, realizing how poorly many of the jokes have aged over the last quarter-century.

The writer pointed out that the script contains material targeting transgender people, ethnic minorities, and women, which he now finds offensive. He confessed that while the tone was meant to be light and silly, such a film would likely never be greenlit by a studio today.

Despite the movie being a box office success that turned a solid profit, Stark felt a sense of defeat in the years that followed. As the film industry shifted away from mid-budget comedies, he found it increasingly difficult to get new projects made.

Seeking a new direction, he returned to graduate school to earn a master’s degree in psychology. Stark embraces the irony of his life path, joking that the man who wrote about two stoners losing a car now wants to ask you about your mother.

He has even bridged his two worlds by authoring a book on talk therapy titled Dude, Where’s My Car-tharsis? This pivot allowed him to leave behind the instability of show business for a career focused on helping others navigate their own life changes.

Tell us if you think comedy movies from the early 2000s have aged well or if they are too offensive for modern audiences in the comments.
