‘East of Eden’ Star Florence Pugh Shines in Latest Red Carpet Appearance
As fall awards season unfolds, few actresses have generated as much excitement around a single project as Florence Pugh has this year. The British actress has dedicated nearly two years to one of the most challenging literary adaptations of her career, and the promotional campaign is now in full swing. Recent photos of Pugh from a recent event, featuring makeup by her longtime collaborator Alex Babsky, highlight that her most significant fall release is just around the corner.
These images come as part of the promotional efforts for ‘East of Eden,’ Pugh’s seven-episode Netflix adaptation of John Steinbeck’s iconic 1952 novel. She recently attended the series’ London photocall and screening, marking one of the last major press events before the show’s premiere.
‘East of Eden’ is set to premiere globally on Netflix on October 1, concluding a project that has been in development since Netflix secured the rights in 2022. Written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan, the series reinterprets Steinbeck’s expansive multigenerational saga of the Trask family, focusing particularly on its central antihero, Cathy Ames, portrayed by Pugh.

This adaptation holds particular importance for Kazan, whose grandfather, Academy Award-winning director Elia Kazan, directed the original 1955 film featuring James Dean. Instead of closely following that earlier film, which only covered a portion of Steinbeck’s novel, Kazan aimed to create something much broader across all seven episodes. In a conversation about the series with Netflix’s Tudum, she expressed that the full narrative allowed her to connect with all the characters rather than just adapting a fragment of the book.

Pugh’s portrayal of Cathy Ames has already sparked considerable early buzz, with the character viewed as one of the most intricate figures in Steinbeck’s original text. The official Netflix synopsis describes the series as a contemporary interpretation of the novel that brings new focus to Cathy as its “indelible antihero,” placing Pugh at the emotional core of a story that spans multiple generations of the Trask family.
Pugh is supported by a talented cast that includes Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask, Hoon Lee as Lee, and Joseph Zada as Cal Trask, with Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, and Ciarán Hinds rounding out the ensemble. Filming took place in New Zealand, with Garth Davis directing the first four episodes and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre helming the final three.
With such a prestigious team involved, from Kazan’s personal connection to the material to Pugh’s rise as one of the most celebrated actresses of her generation, ‘East of Eden’ is already being seen as a strong contender for next year’s awards season. Observers have noted Pugh’s performance as a potential candidate for her first Primetime Emmy nomination, marking a significant milestone in her already remarkable career.
