‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga’ Episode 3 Recap and Ending Explained Wanda’s Ambition Costs Her
Spinoffs of beloved crime dramas carry significant expectations, and ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga’ has demonstrated in its first two episodes that it can thrive independently while still paying homage to the world created by ‘Snowfall’. Set in the vibrant 1990s South Los Angeles, this FX series centers on Wanda Bell, a recovering addict aiming to break into the burgeoning rap scene, and Leon Simmons, her partner grappling with the street politics that linger from his past. Their journey has already highlighted that ambition in this environment invariably comes at a cost.
That cost becomes apparent in episode three, titled “Family Matters,” which premiered on September 22 on FX and Hulu. Written by Sal Calleros and directed by Millicent Shelton, this episode thrusts Wanda’s music aspirations and Leon’s fragile peace with the streets into direct conflict with the family and loyalty they both profess to protect.
The episode kicks off with Artillery, the volatile rapper on whom Wanda has pinned much of her future, now firmly in the LAPD’s sights after dropping a track about a slain officer. Having already endured a beating from two cops and lost a demo, he finds himself back on a Compton street corner selling drugs and rapping when police arrive once more. Although he manages to evade capture, he is now officially a wanted man, and this instability begins to ensnare everyone around him in peril.

Wanda’s younger cousin Lamar quickly becomes collateral damage. Eager to get Artillery on a verse for his new track, Lamar tracks him down into rival Crip territory with Wanda and Dara, only to discover that Artillery is far more focused on survival than meeting a deadline. When one of Artillery’s associates attacks Lamar, James Kinsey intervenes and knocks the assailant out, but chaos ensues as police raid the area, arresting both Lamar and James. Label executive Vance eventually bails them out, and Leon brings them home, where a tense family situation awaits.
Tensions escalate when James reveals that Wanda secured Lamar a record deal, which Lamar signed without hesitation. Big Daddy is furious, and Girdy, still haunted by the music industry’s impact on James’s mother, makes it clear that the family views Wanda’s encouragement as anything but protective. To them, Wanda isn’t shielding Lamar from danger; she’s leading him toward the same fate they’ve witnessed destroy someone they loved.
Meanwhile, at Macroscope Records, label executive Jenny Favarella is battling to convince skeptical executives that rap music deserves investment. When Wanda pushes Lamar’s music forward without fully securing his consent, insisting she needs the “Ryda” mix or the opportunity will collapse, the repercussions land squarely on both women. Jenny ultimately confronts Wanda, bluntly stating that she has ruined it, even as she acknowledges their shared plight within the industry.

As Wanda’s storyline unfolds at home and at the label, Leon’s arc quietly intensifies in the background. Earlier this season, he found a way to resolve a street conflict involving Darryl by leveraging the credibility he built during his years with Franklin Saint, all without resorting to violence. However, that fragile peace is jeopardized when Darryl contacts a dangerous figure named Wolf, reopening the kind of unfinished business Leon has been striving to avoid.
Having witnessed the rise and fall of Franklin’s empire, Leon understands better than most how swiftly disrespect can escalate into retaliation, and how retaliation breeds further violence. Darryl’s decision leaves that threat looming over the episode’s final moments, suggesting that Leon may soon be drawn back into the very world he has worked so hard to escape, especially with someone he loves caught in the crossfire.
By the conclusion of “Family Matters,” both Wanda and Leon are confronted with the repercussions of their choices, which were intended to protect their loved ones. Wanda’s ambition has strained her relationship with her family, while Leon’s carefully constructed peace now hangs by a thread. With five episodes still left in the season, the show seems poised to explore just how much both characters are willing to sacrifice to create something better than the world ‘Snowfall’ left behind.
