Ed O’Neill Joins ‘Modern Family’ Cast for Rare Reunion Appearance
Few sitcoms have managed to create an ensemble that feels as much like family as ‘Modern Family’ did during its eleven-season run on ABC. The Emmy-winning comedy transformed its cast into a close-knit group, both on-screen and off, leaving fans eager for any signs of connection among the Pritchett-Dunphy clan since the show’s finale in 2020.
This week, that anticipation was met with excitement as several stars from the beloved series came together for a rare group appearance that quickly took social media by storm. Given the show’s reliance on its cast’s authentic chemistry, seeing them reunite outside of scripted scenes felt more significant than just a casual gathering.
The reunion featured Ed O’Neill, Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, along with ‘Modern Family’ co-creator Christopher Lloyd. They shared a series of photos over the weekend, with Vergara posting the images on Instagram on Monday, August 31, expressing how much she missed her former co-stars nearly six years after the show’s finale.
What made this gathering particularly special was O’Neill’s attendance. The 80-year-old actor, who portrayed family patriarch Jay Pritchett for over a decade, has largely kept a low profile since the show concluded, making appearances like this increasingly rare.
Fans expressed their excitement at seeing O’Neill again, with many commenting on how youthful and healthy he looked in the new photos. Since ‘Modern Family’ ended, O’Neill has maintained a relatively quiet public life, although he did portray disgraced Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in FX’s ‘Clipped’ in 2024 and had a recurring role in 2025’s ‘All’s Fair.’
‘Modern Family’ aired from 2009 to 2020, spanning eleven seasons and concluding with its 250th episode. Throughout its run, the series garnered an impressive 88 Emmy nominations and won 22 awards, including five for outstanding comedy series, along with acting accolades for Bowen, Eric Stonestreet, and Ty Burrell.
In the show, O’Neill’s Jay was married to Vergara’s Gloria, while Ferguson and Bowen played his adult children from a previous marriage, Mitchell and Claire, respectively. The ensemble also included Burrell as Claire’s husband Phil, Stonestreet as Mitchell’s husband Cameron, and a younger generation of characters portrayed by Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Sarah Hyland, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, and Jeremy Maguire.
While this isn’t the first time cast members have reunited since the show ended, O’Neill’s appearances have been notably infrequent, which likely contributed to the strong resonance of this particular gathering among long-time fans.

The off-screen bonds among the cast have continued to manifest in various ways over the years. Winter has previously mentioned living as roommates with her on-screen brother Gould, humorously noting that the arrangement feels like their own tiny ‘Modern Family’ reboot unfolding in real life.
For a series that built its identity around chosen and blended family, moments like this latest reunion serve as a poignant reminder that the connections formed on set didn’t fade away when the cameras stopped rolling. With the show currently streaming on Hulu, Peacock, and Disney+, both new and returning fans have ample opportunities to revisit the chemistry that made this cast so memorable.
