Elisabeth Moss Discusses ‘The Testaments’ Finale: Agnes’ Twist and Season 2 Insights
The first season of ‘The Testaments’ has just concluded, leaving viewers with numerous questions. This series serves as a sequel to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, continuing the narrative set in the oppressive world of Gilead. According to Variety, the creators are already in the process of developing Season 2, although the timing for production is still being determined.
Showrunner Bruce Miller mentioned in an interview that the writing for the next season is actively taking place. He simply stated, “we’re writing the show, we’re breaking the season.” This indicates that Season 2 is not merely a concept but is indeed in development.
The finale centers on Agnes and Daisy, two young women navigating life under Gilead’s strict regime. Agnes, portrayed by Chase Infiniti, and Daisy, played by Lucy Halliday, face different yet interconnected challenges by the season’s end.
The two characters are depicted walking through Aunt Lydia’s school, striving to remain resilient amid a harsh environment. Agnes has lost her opportunity for an arranged marriage and has seen her status diminish. Meanwhile, Daisy has made a perilous decision to go undercover again, putting herself at risk. Despite their struggles, they remain united with their friend Shunammite, played by Rowan Blanchard.
Elisabeth Moss reflected on this poignant moment during the interview. She expressed, “When I see in that finale, those three girls walking down the hall, I get chills talking about it. It makes me cry every time I watch it. It’s so inspiring, it’s so emotional, it’s so exciting.” Her remarks, reported by Variety, highlight the significance of this scene for both the cast and the creators.
Moss further elaborated that the series aims to balance heavy political themes with the everyday emotions of teenagers. She noted that even in the oppressive world of Gilead, the characters grapple with typical feelings, friendships, and fears. This blend is part of what makes the narrative resonate with the creators.
A significant aspect of the finale also revolves around Agnes and her evolving identity. She experiences a drastic shift in status, transitioning from being viewed as a “golden child” to being marginalized. According to Bruce Miller, this transformation is crucial as it illustrates how quickly power dynamics can shift within Gilead’s system.

Agnes also makes a significant personal sacrifice by forgoing her chance at an elite marriage to protect her friend Becka and assist others in escaping danger. This decision places her in a challenging situation but also demonstrates her growing independence.
One of the most shocking revelations of the season is Agnes discovering a crucial truth about her mother. She learns that her mother is June Osborne, a key figure in the resistance, portrayed by Moss. This moment marks a pivotal turning point for Agnes, even if she does not fully grasp its implications yet.
Bruce Miller explained that this revelation is intended to gradually evolve her character. He noted that it does not instantly turn her against Gilead, but it ignites a change within her that will develop over time.
Another major topic in the interview was Daisy’s parentage. Fans have been speculating about her true parents, especially following deviations from the original book timeline. Miller stated that Daisy’s origin story is intentionally intricate and not yet fully disclosed.
He explained that part of this complexity is creative. The show does not adhere strictly to the book, as that would not translate well for television. Instead, the writers have adjusted the narrative to allow Agnes and Daisy to share scenes and develop together.
Elisabeth Moss also emphasized that some mysteries are more impactful when depicted visually rather than explained outright. She remarked, “There are things that come up with making a TV show.” Her point was that sometimes the emotional journey of discovery outweighs straightforward explanations.
The creators confirmed that June Osborne remains a vital part of the storyline, but her appearances will depend on scheduling and other commitments. Miller humorously noted the challenge of balancing real-world constraints while striving to maintain a compelling narrative.
Regarding Season 2 timing, Miller mentioned that the team is proceeding cautiously. He emphasized the importance of quality over speed in the writing process. He also indicated that production schedules are influenced by decisions from MGM, Hulu, and Disney.
The interview also hinted at the future of Daisy’s identity and the potential for revealing more about her parents and family background later in the series. Miller confirmed that ideas are in place, but nothing has been finalized yet. Moss also highlighted that the story has much more to explore, including inquiries about Daisy’s father and family ties.
As Season 1 wraps up, the show leaves audiences with strong emotional tension and many unresolved questions. According to Variety’s report, Season 2 is already being written, but fans will have to wait for further revelations about Agnes, Daisy, and the future of Gilead.
