Few characters in Panem are as instantly recognizable as Effie Trinket, the pastel-and-wig-loving Capitol escort. Elizabeth Banks made the role iconic across the original ‘The Hunger Games’ films, so anyone taking it over has big heels to fill. That challenge now belongs to Elle Fanning, who portrays a younger Effie in the franchise’s upcoming prequel.

‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ is set 24 years before the events of the first film. It begins on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. This year brings a deadly twist: each district sends twice as many tributes, resulting in 48 children being sent into the arena.

The film has unveiled a fresh look at Elle Fanning’s Effie Trinket. On September 29, Pop Base shared an exclusive new image of Fanning as Effie alongside Iris Apatow as Proserpina Trinket, with the film set to hit theaters on November 20. The photo captures the two women at what appears to be a Capitol party, each holding a cocktail glass.

The styling is striking. Apatow’s Proserpina sports bright red hair sculpted into glossy finger waves, complemented by a light-blue top. Fanning’s Effie features blonde curls adorned with a dark floral accent, a colorful printed scarf, and a bold ring.

In the story, the pair are sisters. Proserpina is Effie’s younger sister and a member of the prep team, which leads Effie to become the District 12 stylist. She takes over from Magno Stift, played by Billy Porter, and plays a significant role in marketing Haymitch to potential sponsors.

Proserpina also collaborates with Vitus, portrayed by Edvin Ryding, in the pre-arena preparation of the District 12 tributes. This makes the Trinkets a crucial part of the Capitol narrative. While Effie’s role in the book is limited, the trailer showcases her prominently.

Fanning was cast in May 2025 and credits fans for her role, mentioning to MTV that the studio was inundated with requests for her to play Effie. She has expressed that Effie is her favorite character.

Fanning has shared insights about her preparation, stating that she took numerous selfies while in costume on set. She was eager to get the character right for fans and confirmed that she consulted with Banks.

The prequel boasts a star-studded cast. Joseph Zada plays 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, while Ralph Fiennes portrays President Snow. Kieran Culkin takes on the role of Caesar Flickerman, Glenn Close plays Drusilla Sickle, Mckenna Grace is Maysilee Donner, and Jesse Plemons portrays Plutarch Heavensbee.

Additionally, original film leads Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are rumored to appear in an epilogue or flash-forward sequence set years after the main events. The full trailer released in September did not reveal their appearances.

Directed by Francis Lawrence and scripted by Billy Ray, the film began production in the summer of 2025 in Spain’s Somiedo Natural Park. It arrives following five films in the franchise that have collectively grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide.

Fans now have a glimpse into the Capitol side of the story. With the Trinket sisters’ vibrant outfits and the trailer’s vivid colors, the film promises to juxtapose the glamour of the Capitol with the brutality of the Games.
