Emily Blunt Reveals the Comedy Film She Regrets Making
Emily Blunt is known for her thoughtful film choices, believing that an actor’s reputation is shaped by their roles much like a musician’s is by their albums. This conviction drives her to carefully evaluate every script that comes her way.
During her appearance on the Howard Stern Show, she expressed, I take such pride in the decisions that I make, and they mean so much to me, the films that I do. I care very deeply, very, very much, about the choices I make. That’s all I have, the choices that I make.
Blunt shared her admiration for ‘Iron Man’ and her desire to collaborate with Robert Downey Jr. She was offered the role of Black Widow, which she thought would have been incredible, but ultimately had to decline.
Instead, she found herself tied to a project she was not enthusiastic about due to an existing contract. That film was ‘Gulliver’s Travels’, released in 2010. She candidly stated, I was contracted to do Gulliver’s Travels. I didn’t want to do Gulliver’s Travels. This marked a rare occasion where contractual obligations overshadowed her usual careful decision-making.
Directed by Rob Letterman and featuring Jack Black as Lemuel Gulliver, the film is a modern adaptation of Jonathan Swift’s classic tale. In this version, Gulliver works in a newspaper mailroom and finds himself in a bizarre land inhabited by tiny people. Despite its financial success, doubling its budget at the box office, the film was met with harsh criticism from reviewers.
Critics lambasted the film for straying from the clever satire of the original book, resulting in a dismal 19% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many pointed out that it leaned too heavily on childish humor and lackluster special effects rather than strong writing. A notable example was a scene where Jack Black’s character extinguishes a palace fire by urinating on it.

Although Blunt was not keen on the project, she appreciated the camaraderie on set, stating, There were a lot of really lovely people who were heaven to work with. I actually had a good time, a laugh, with all of them, but it irked my heart for it to have happened in the first place.
While the filming experience may have been enjoyable for the cast, it did not resonate well with audiences. The film is often regarded as a misstep in Blunt’s career. Her performance did not particularly stand out, and the entire experience served as a valuable lesson for her to avoid being compelled into projects she does not wish to undertake in the future.
