The summer of 2026 is gearing up to be a pivotal season for horror at the box office. Following years of inconsistent theatrical performances for genre films, this year has showcased hit after hit, from the indie phenomenon ‘Obsession’ raking in over $166 million worldwide on a shoestring budget to A24’s ‘Backrooms’ breaking records with an $81 million opening weekend. The momentum is palpable, and now one of horror’s most cherished franchises is ready to capitalize on this wave as it heads to theaters.

‘Evil Dead Burn’ is set to hit theaters on July 10, carrying the legacy of its predecessors while promising a fresh take. This film serves as a standalone sequel to both ‘Evil Dead’ (2013) and ‘Evil Dead Rise’ (2023), marking the sixth installment in the beloved series. Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are producing through Ghost House Pictures, with original franchise star Bruce Campbell and ‘Evil Dead Rise’ director Lee Cronin as executive producers. The excitement is amplified by the new creative vision behind the camera.

French director Sébastien Vaniček was chosen by Raimi after his debut feature ‘Infested’ showcased his talent for crafting visceral, claustrophobic horror. With pre-sales already showing strong numbers, ‘Evil Dead Burn’ is projected to achieve the highest opening in franchise history. According to Boxoffice Pro, the film is expected to open between $30 million and $40 million domestically, surpassing the previous record held by the 2013 ‘Evil Dead’ reboot, which opened with $25.8 million.

Vaniček has been open about his vision for ‘Evil Dead Burn,’ expressing his desire to create a film that is both brutal and challenging for audiences. This commitment to intensity is evident in the film’s rating journey. In a recent interview with SFX magazine, Vaniček revealed that one scene had to be cut to secure an R rating, indicating that the original version was at risk of receiving an NC-17 classification. He also mentioned that a director’s cut will be significantly more violent than what will be shown in theaters. For franchise fans who appreciate its unyielding approach to horror, this news feels more like a promise than a warning.

The official synopsis reveals a story centered on a woman who, after losing her husband, seeks comfort with her in-laws at their remote family home. As family members gradually transform into Deadites, the gathering turns into a nightmare, forcing her to confront the vows she made in life that persist even in death. This premise is more intimate and personal than previous entries, focusing on themes of grief and family rather than random chaos, which has generated positive early buzz.

The context surrounding ‘Evil Dead Burn’ is just as significant as the film itself. The 2026 summer box office has already seen notable horror successes, including ‘Scream 7,’ which became the highest-grossing entry in that franchise at $207.9 million worldwide, alongside breakout hits like ‘Obsession’ and ‘Backrooms.’ The horror genre is clearly experiencing a resurgence, and studios are taking notice.

Strategically positioned in the summer calendar, ‘Evil Dead Burn’ aims to avoid the biggest blockbuster competition. The film is expected to serve as counter-programming against the live-action ‘Moana’ remake opening the same weekend, with Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ debuting just one week later. The cast also brings notable star power, featuring Souheila Yacoub from ‘Dune: Part Two,’ Hunter Doohan from ‘Wednesday’ and ‘Daredevil: Born Again,’ alongside Luciane Buchanan from ‘The Night Agent’ and Tandi Wright from ‘Pearl.’

With ‘Evil Dead Rise’ having opened to $24.5 million in 2023 and ultimately grossing $67.2 million domestically, the expectations are high, and early indicators suggest ‘Evil Dead Burn’ is ready to exceed those figures. The Deadites are making a comeback, the franchise is stronger than ever, and the summer horror season is just beginning.
