A fresh live-action adaptation of the ‘Scooby-Doo’ franchise is on the horizon, and fans are treated to a new glimpse of what the series is set to deliver. Titled Scooby-Doo: Origins, this show will blend live-action with CGI and is scheduled to debut on Netflix in 2027.

This series is characterized as a supernatural mystery that follows four teenagers as they attempt to unravel a peculiar case involving a potential supernatural murder. The unique twist is that the sole witness may be a Great Dane puppy who will eventually become Scooby-Doo.

Created by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who also take on roles as showrunners, head writers, and executive producers, the series is produced by Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and Midnight Radio. Development of the project was initially reported in April 2024, with the official announcement following in March 2025, as noted by Deadline Hollywood and Netflix press materials.

The narrative centers on how the iconic group initially comes together. Daphne Blake, Shaggy Rogers, Velma Dinkley, and Fred Jones are all teenagers enjoying their last summer at Camp Ruby-Spears. During their time there, they become embroiled in a mystery involving a supernatural occurrence and a potential murder case, marking the moment that connects their futures.

The casting features a blend of young talent and seasoned actors. Mckenna Grace portrays Daphne Blake, while Tanner Hagen takes on the role of Shaggy Rogers. Abby Ryder Fortson plays Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins portrays Fred Jones. Paul Walter Hauser appears as Scooby’s owner, with Frank Welker returning to voice Scooby-Doo, continuing his long-standing association with the character. Sara Gilbert and Maxwell Simkins also have supporting roles.

Frank Welker’s participation has been emphasized in early production updates, as he has voiced Scooby-Doo for many years across various animated projects. His return ties the new series to the franchise’s enduring legacy.

This series is being positioned as a reimagining of how the mystery-solving team first came together. Rather than starting with the fully formed group fans are familiar with, Scooby-Doo: Origins delves into their early days and how they gradually evolve into the team that would later travel in the Mystery Machine to solve cases.

Filming commenced on April 24 at Cinespace Film Studios in Atlanta, with production expected to continue through September 2026. Industry reports indicate that the series is planned as an eight-episode season.

Netflix has confirmed that Scooby-Doo: Origins will premiere in 2027. While a full trailer has yet to be released, early production updates and casting news have already generated significant excitement, particularly among long-time fans of the franchise.

This series is part of a broader initiative to reintroduce classic animated properties in innovative formats. With its combination of mystery, teenage drama, and CGI elements, the show aims to present a fresh take on a beloved story while maintaining the core characters’ essence.

For now, fans are eagerly anticipating more visuals and trailers. However, with filming in progress and a complete cast assembled, Scooby-Doo: Origins is already shaping up to be one of Netflix’s most highly anticipated upcoming releases.
