John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel ‘East of Eden’ is not typically associated with relaxation. This expansive saga explores themes of good, evil, and family, set against the backdrop of California’s Salinas Valley from the Civil War to the conclusion of World War I. Netflix has been developing its new limited series for years, initially linking Florence Pugh to the project in 2022.

This latest promotional effort feels like a refreshing tonal shift. The seven-episode series, penned by Zoe Kazan—whose grandfather Elia Kazan directed the 1955 film featuring James Dean—centers on Pugh as the antihero Cathy Ames.

With the premiere just around the corner, Netflix has opted for an unconventional promotional strategy. On Monday, the streaming service released a video titled “FLORENCE PUGH ASMR,” reminding viewers that ‘East of Eden’ premieres on Oct. 1. The clip has already garnered 148K views.

In the video, Pugh is seen in a cozy, book-filled study, dressed in a dark top with lace accents. A vintage microphone is positioned in front of her, a green banker’s lamp illuminates the background, and she holds a small notebook and pencil. A playful “Ha ha” caption overlays the moment, suggesting a lighthearted tone.

Netflix Canada has described it as an ASMR reading of ‘East of Eden’ that is “everything,” positioning it as a companion piece to the series adaptation. The clip runs for 5 minutes and 54 seconds, which is lengthy for a promo, indicating Netflix anticipates viewers will want to settle in.

This approach is effective because the series is built around voice. The trailer opens with narration from Pugh’s Cathy, discussing the concept of monsters being born to human parents, a sentiment taken directly from the opening of chapter 8 in Steinbeck’s novel. Netflix’s own Tudum coverage describes the series as ‘East of Eden’ from the perspective of its most notorious monster.

Transforming that intimate, deliberate delivery into an ASMR experience is a natural progression. It also appeals to viewers who may never pick up a Steinbeck novel.

The narrative follows the Trask family through generations, with Cathy Ames arriving bloodied at the home of brothers Adam and Charles Trask, disrupting their bond. Christopher Abbott portrays Adam, while Mike Faist plays Charles, and their father Cyrus is portrayed by Tracy Letts.

The cast also features Hoon Lee as Lee, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Joseph Zada as Cal, and Joe Anders as Aron. Garth Davis directed episodes 1 through 4, while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed episodes 5 through 7. The series was filmed in various locations across New Zealand.

Kazan has expressed her desire to keep the series grounded in Steinbeck’s writing. She told Netflix Tudum that it was crucial to “stay rooted in the text of the book” while exploring Cathy’s character. This includes utilizing Steinbeck’s own journals to grasp his intent.

Pugh, who also serves as an executive producer, has described the role as one of the most intricate female characters in literature, stating that Cathy is the driving force of this adaptation.

Early indications suggest significant aspirations for the series. Gold Derby has noted that the scale of the series could make it a contender at the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards leading up to the 2027 Emmy race. The show also had its UK premiere at BAFTA HQ in London earlier this week.

All seven episodes will be available on Netflix on Thursday, Oct. 1, allowing viewers to binge-watch the series on the same day.

For a story centered on the darker aspects of human nature, a soft-spoken ASMR promo is an unexpected choice. It demonstrates that even a heavyweight literary adaptation can approach its audience with a sense of humor.
