Horror films have historically faced challenges in gaining recognition from Academy voters, often relegated to technical categories despite strong audience support. However, this trend is changing, as genre films are beginning to receive the prestigious awards campaigns typically reserved for dramatic features.

‘Obsession‘ appears to be at the forefront of this shift. The low-budget horror-romance directed by Curry Barker has become the highest-grossing original film of the decade, amassing over $505 million globally on a mere $750,000 production budget, a success that studios cannot overlook as awards season approaches.

This box office triumph is translating into an extensive awards campaign. According to Variety, Focus Features is pushing ‘Obsession’ for nominations in fourteen categories, including Best Picture, Best Director for Barker, and Best Actress for breakout star Inde Navarrette.

The comprehensive nature of Focus Features’ campaign is noteworthy. In addition to the major Picture and Director nominations, the studio is also advocating for Michael Johnson in the Best Actor category, along with supporting performances from Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter. Barker is positioned as a formidable contender, receiving pushes in Original Screenplay and Film Editing, reminiscent of Sean Baker’s three-category sweep with his Best Picture winner ‘Anora.’

The campaign extends into below-the-line categories as well, with cinematographer Taylor Clemons, composer Rock Burwell, casting director Skyler Zurn, and production designer Vivian Gray all receiving individual recognition. Additionally, sound mixers YJ Gold and Ben Zarai and makeup and hair department head Allie Shehorn are included, showcasing a well-rounded campaign rather than one focused solely on acting nominations.

Navarrette’s nomination for Best Actress is particularly significant, considering her rapid rise in the industry. Just a year ago, she was mainly recognized for a minor role on The CW’s ‘Superman & Lois,’ but her portrayal of Nikki in ‘Obsession’ has become the film’s emotional core, earning acclaim for her ability to convey both menace and vulnerability.

Choosing to place her in the lead actress category instead of supporting is a strategic move, as studios often guide actors toward less competitive categories to enhance their chances. However, given the pivotal nature of her role in the film’s success, Focus Features clearly believes this risk is worthwhile.

The extensive nature of this campaign reflects a strategy that Focus Features and other studios have employed before, following the model of Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’ in 2017, which competed across multiple categories and secured four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won Best Original Screenplay. Whether ‘Obsession’ can achieve similar crossover success remains to be seen, but the scale of this campaign indicates that Focus Features is not treating it as a long shot.

With Barker positioned as a rare multi-category contender and Navarrette entering a Best Actress field that industry experts have described as relatively sparse this year, ‘Obsession’ is gaining significant momentum as the awards season approaches.
