‘From the World of John Wick Caine’ Spin-Off Movie Production Update

The ‘John Wick’ universe is expanding once more, as the new spin-off film ‘From the World of John Wick: Caine’ has officially commenced production.

This film centers on the character Caine, portrayed by Donnie Yen, who reprises his role after appearing in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4.’ Yen is not only starring but also directing the movie and contributed to the development of the original story. The screenplay is penned by Robert Askins and Mattson Tomlin, based on an early story concept created by Yen in collaboration with Chad Stahelski.

Set after the events of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ the narrative follows Caine as he navigates life after being freed from his obligations to the High Table, the formidable assassin organization that governs much of the underworld in the franchise.

Donnie Yen leads the cast as Caine, with Rina Sawayama returning as Akira. The film is a collaborative effort between Lionsgate Films, Thunder Road Films, and 87Eleven Productions, with Lionsgate managing distribution.

Filming is currently taking place in Europe, with additional shoots scheduled for Hong Kong later in the production timeline. Reports indicate that Markus Förderer is serving as the cinematographer for the film.

The concept for a Caine-centric movie has been in the works for several years. Initial discussions began after ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ particularly following the post-credits scene that teased future conflict between Caine and Akira. Producers and creators of the franchise have also hinted at various spin-off projects as the ‘John Wick’ universe continues to expand.

The project was officially confirmed and greenlit by Lionsgate in 2025, with Donnie Yen taking on the dual role of star and director. The film is characterized as a modern action movie influenced by classic Hong Kong martial arts cinema.

‘Caine’ is set to be one of the next significant entries in the ‘John Wick’ franchise, continuing the storyline after the events of ‘Chapter 4.’
