Hulu is making moves with its hit crime thriller. ‘Furious’, the Emmy Rossum-led drama that has quickly become one of the summer’s most popular new shows, has been renewed for a second season. This announcement came just days before the season one finale aired.

Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, the series features Rossum as FBI agent Alice Black, alongside Lola Petticrew as the calculating serial killer Catherine Grace. With both critics and fans captivated, the early renewal is a logical step given the show’s impressive viewership trends.

Loosely inspired by the 1987 film ‘Black Widow’, ‘Furious’ tracks Alice’s pursuit of a mysterious female serial killer whose twisted sense of justice blurs the lines between hunter and hunted. As their paths increasingly intertwine, both women become convinced they are justified in their actions.

The series premiered on July 27, 2026, concluding its first season with a finale that streamed on August 31. Alongside Rossum and Petticrew, the cast includes Quincy Tyler Bernstine as Alice’s FBI colleague Nora Washington and Scoot McNairy as NYPD detective Danny Kelly.

The season also featured guest stars like Jake Lacy, Rob Delaney, Hope Davis, Rob Yang, and Steve Way, enhancing the storyline. The show has received acclaim for its unique take on crime procedural elements, particularly its focus on the impact of violence against women.

Critically, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. The series debuted with a perfect 100 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and currently holds an impressive 98 percent, a factor that did not go unnoticed by Hulu executives considering a renewal.

Hulu confirmed the second season of ‘Furious’ just four days before the season one finale aired, marking an unusually early renewal for a platform that typically waits for extensive viewership data. According to the network, one-day views for episode seven increased by 40 percent compared to the premiere, indicating that the audience continued to grow rather than diminish after the show’s launch.

This growth is rare in an era where streaming shows often struggle to maintain viewer interest beyond their opening weekend. While Hulu has not disclosed specific viewing figures, the upward trend alone was likely compelling enough for the renewal decision.

The timing of the renewal is significant, especially as it coincided with Hulu’s cancellation of another new original, the comedy ‘Not Suitable for Work’, making the swift decision to renew ‘Furious’ even more notable.

Rossum shared the exciting news in a social media video, expressing her delight over the season two pickup. Meriwether will return as showrunner and executive producer alongside Rossum through her Composition 8 banner, with Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead, Sam Hoffman, and Brian Kirk, who directed the first two episodes, also involved.

While specific details about the upcoming season remain under wraps, Rossum and Meriwether hinted at their creative process during a recent FYC panel. Rossum mentioned that she has been actively pitching ideas to her showrunner, humorously noting the varying responses she receives.

Rossum revealed that she has been sending Meriwether numerous text messages with her ideas, some of which get approved while others go unanswered, playfully acknowledging she can take a hint. Meriwether responded by saying that some of those pitches receive a more enthusiastic reaction than others.

While Hulu has yet to disclose storylines, additional casting, episode count, or production timelines for the new season, fans are eager for any hints about the future of the cat-and-mouse dynamic between Alice and Catherine, especially after the cliffhanger ending of season one.

Although casting for season two is not finalized, it seems likely that the core cast will return, given their integral roles in the show’s success. Rossum and Petticrew are expected to remain central to the series, as their evolving relationship has been highlighted as a key strength by critics.

Bernstine and McNairy are also anticipated to return, considering their significant contributions to the FBI and NYPD investigations. It remains uncertain whether guest stars like Jake Lacy or Hope Davis will reprise their roles, particularly based on how season one concluded for their characters.

Meriwether’s experience with shows like ‘The Dropout’ and ‘Dying for Sex’ suggests she has the ability to expand a limited ensemble into a richer narrative without losing the essence of the original premise. This bodes well for a second season built on a strong foundation.

With a nearly flawless Rotten Tomatoes score and viewership on the rise, ‘Furious’ is poised to become one of Hulu’s standout dramas in the upcoming year. What are you hoping to see unfold between Alice and Catherine when ‘Furious’ returns for season two?
