Emmy Rossum is experiencing a remarkable year that many actors dream of. Her Hulu crime thriller ‘Furious’ debuted on July 27 and swiftly became one of the summer’s unexpected streaming successes, with Rossum not only starring but also serving as an executive producer.

The series centers on an FBI agent pursuing a cunning female serial killer, earning acclaim for its nuanced portrayal of morality. It boasts a 98% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Hulu has already renewed it for a second season before the first has concluded.

The latest excitement stems from a set of stunning images shared by Cinethology on October 4. In these photos, Rossum showcases a fitted black short-sleeved top with a textured, shimmering finish, her dark hair styled in voluminous curls, as she poses in two distinct settings.

This look mirrors her all-black ensemble from October 2 at Edward Enninful’s Paris Fashion Week party, where she paired a mesh-paneled black top with a leather mini skirt, knee-high boots, and sunglasses. This event took place during the Spring/Summer 2027 womenswear shows, which run until October 6, with Enninful, the former British Vogue editor-in-chief, hosting exclusive gatherings through his company EE72.

In ‘Furious’, Rossum portrays FBI agent Alice Black, who investigates a serial killer named Catherine Grace, played by Lola Petticrew, targeting powerful men linked to abuse. Their paths converge throughout the narrative, blurring the lines of morality.

The series was created by Elizabeth Meriwether, featuring a talented cast that includes Quincy Tyler Bernstine as the head of the FBI’s sex crimes unit, Scoot McNairy as Alice’s former NYPD partner, and Jake Lacy. Brian Kirk directed the first two episodes, with 20th Television and Searchlight Television producing the show, and Rossum among its executive producers.

The show premiered with three episodes on its launch day, followed by weekly releases leading to the finale on August 31. Audience engagement surged as the season progressed, with episode 7 attracting 40% more one-day views than the premiere, and the finale seeing a 90% increase over the premiere. Overall, the series amassed 43 million hours viewed and reached No. 5 on Luminate’s weekly charts, a remarkable feat for a show without an established franchise.

Critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive. In addition to its 98% Rotten Tomatoes score, the show earned a Metacritic score of 81, indicating broad critical acclaim. The Playlist awarded it a B+ and described it as a gripping revenge thriller, while The Guardian highlighted Rossum’s performance as a career-defining role.

Critics have noted how the series addresses its themes, delving into trauma, exploitation, and institutional failures rather than adhering to a conventional procedural format. Rossum’s character is portrayed as more than a straightforward hero, and her complex relationship with justice has resonated with audiences.

Fans have been following Rossum since her early film roles. She won a Critics’ Choice Award and a Saturn Award for her performance in ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ in 2004, and she portrayed Fiona Gallagher over nine seasons of ‘Shameless’ on Showtime from 2011 to 2019.

More recently, she starred alongside Tom Holland in ‘The Crowded Room’ in 2023 and took the stage in the Off-Broadway play ‘Walden’ in 2024. Additionally, she has released two albums, including ‘Sentimental Journey’, which topped the jazz albums chart.

In a July interview with ‘Good Morning America’, Rossum spoke about ‘Furious’ and shared an empowering message for working mothers.

With a second season of ‘Furious’ confirmed, Rossum has much to anticipate, although Hulu has yet to reveal an episode count or production schedule. Deadline reported in June that she has also joined the cast of the film ‘Rubber Hut’ alongside Michael Imperioli and Ariana Greenblatt.

For now, the combination of a hit series, a fashion week appearance, and a fresh set of photos has firmly placed Rossum back in the spotlight. After years of beloved performances, this moment marks a new chapter for an actress with a rich history.
