Television is filled with cautionary tales about shows that falter in their second season, often losing the momentum built during a promising debut. Even series that eventually regain their footing frequently see audience numbers dwindle before word of mouth can catch up.

‘Adults‘ appeared to be on a similar path after its rocky debut in May 2025. The FX ensemble comedy follows five twenty-somethings—Samir, Billie, Paul Baker, Issa, and Anton—sharing a house in Bayside, Queens, as they navigate the messy and often embarrassing journey of adulthood together.

However, that uncertain start has transformed into genuine momentum. According to The Hollywood Reporter, streaming viewership for ‘Adults’ has surged by 40% compared to the same period during season one, with gains based on Disney’s internal streaming data tracking the show’s performance across Hulu and Disney+.

This growth is particularly notable internationally, where viewership outside the United States has doubled compared to the show’s first season. These figures reflect the twelve days since the eight-episode second season premiered as a binge release on Hulu, while also airing two episodes weekly on FXX, mirroring the release strategy used for season one on FX.

This audience growth aligns closely with a significant shift in critical reception. While season one received mixed reviews for struggling to feel culturally relevant before its ensemble had fully gelled, season two boasts a perfect 100% average Tomatometer score, along with a strong 79 out of 100 on Metacritic.

Variety’s review highlighted this turnaround, noting that the show has gained its own momentum this time around, largely driven by a cast whose chemistry no longer relies on broad generational commentary to resonate. IndieWire and The A.V. Club echoed these positive assessments, crediting co-creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw for focusing on the ensemble’s strongest dynamics rather than repeating the missteps of the first season.

A prequel episode, “Marathon Day,” released on July 31 ahead of the new season, also seems to have helped build anticipation for the premiere, providing longtime viewers with additional context about how the group first came together. This episode focused on Paul Baker, a Canadian roommate whose expiring visa led to a marriage of convenience with Anton in the season one finale, setting up a love triangle involving Anton, Paul Baker, and Issa that carries directly into the new season.

Produced by FX Productions, with Kronengold and Shaw serving as showrunners alongside executive producers Nick Kroll, Sarah Naftalis, Jonathan Krisel, Alicia Van Couvering, and Rob Rosell, ‘Adults’ has achieved something genuinely challenging for a young ensemble comedy: transforming a shaky first impression into a full-blown creative and commercial comeback. With both reviews and viewership numbers trending sharply upward, the show appears well-positioned for whatever comes next.

For a series that could have easily faded after an uneven debut, ‘Adults’ now stands as a true example of a show using its sophomore season to prove its skeptics wrong rather than confirming their concerns.

This kind of turnaround is particularly significant in a streaming landscape where second seasons often struggle to maintain the audience a show’s debut attracted. With international viewing numbers doubling and domestic streaming climbing 40% over the same period last year, ‘Adults’ has established itself as one of the more encouraging renewal stories of the current TV season, reminding us that a rocky start doesn’t always dictate a show’s future.
